Dec. 22, 2004 Book Reviews – Sports Ready, Set, Go! Synergy Fitness for Time- Crunched Adults - ISBN 0971663394 By Phil Campbell In their popular book, The Millionaire Next Door, the authors present a story about a professor who was lecturing investors on how to invest. It turns out that the professor had no money himself in the stock market – he wasn’t an investor! Phil Campbell, author of Ready, Set, Go! Synergy Fitness, isn’t caught up in the not- practicing-what-you-preach syndrome. Campbell is an accomplished athlete, and still in super condition at age 51. Campbell’s book is a revolutionary approach to fitness for everyone, but particularly those who have hit mid-age and more. His book presents the real fountain of youth – growth hormone. Only its not the stuff the baseball players are loading up on – it is the natural production that comes through exercise. And again a caveat – not any type of exercise will do. Campbell describes the specific type of exercise that causes the growth hormone to flow and work its muscle-building, fat-burning magic. This book is rich in photos and good encouragement as well. The logical presentation of the concepts are very well put together. If you are looking for a way to turn the tables on your fat, or just want an approach to health and fitness that works, this book is a must. The Back Nine By John D. Bowling If you like the game of golf, you should like this book on the game of golf. The book is set up with the clever analogy of life (front nine pre-retirement, back nine is retirement). Bowling’s book is not a how-to-play rendition but rather a “how-to-enjoy-it-on-a-budget” approach. An admitted “working stiff,” Mr. Bowling focuses as much on the people as he does on the golf. There are many interesting anecdotes and quotes sprinkled throughout from notables such as Arnold Palmer, Billy Graham, Billy Casper, etc. Mr. Bowling provides a tour of some of the Senior Golf Association courses (particularly in the south), and how they play. His emphasis on the people you meet and friendships that result from the game will make this an enjoyable read for the golf aficionado who realizes that more than a game is involved. Michael Johnson was the sprint champ who flew (via golden shoes) to 200 and 400 meter medals and records. However, the benefit of this book is more cerebral; it presents the iron will necessary behind hard- core training principles; principles that can be adapted to all areas of life. Well-written, with good photos, the book is encouraging and thought-provoking in the area of personal development. If you are looking for something to get ready for the coming year, this book will fill the bill. ------------ About the author: Dwayne Hines currently has 12 books selling in major bookstores and writes for major magazines such as Physical and FitnessRX.
