Mortal Kombat: Deception [Game Review]

By Eric Schomburg
Dec. 21, 2004

Ever since 1992, the video game Mortal Kombat has revolutionized the video game industry. Creators Ed Boon and John Tobias put together a low-budget fighting game called “Mortal Kombat.” At that time the most popular fighting game was Street Fighter II, but that was about to change.

The fighting in Mortal Kombat was good, but what really caught the attention of players was blood and the infamous fatalities that players loved to perform. Mortal Kombat sparked a revolution, producing a mass-market of merchandise and even major motion-pictures.

After a while though, Mortal Kombat wasn’t as shocking. Mortal Kombat 4 was really the turning point for Mortal Kombat’s close to extinction. Mortal Kombat 4 brought a new way of playing, new characters, and a new story. Things that the Mortal Kombat fans weren’t ready for, they still wanted the nostalgic characters from previous Mortal Kombat games. Even Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Mortal Kombat’s second motion-picture, was deemed as one of the worst films ever made. It seemed that Mortal Kombat’s grip on video game fans was slowly starting to slip away.

While it seemed Mortal Kombat was long gone, Midway released, Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. Originally called, Mortal Kombat: Vengeance, this new Mortal Kombat brought back the basics, new characters, old characters including the return of Shang Tsung, who was one of the best villains in a video game, fatalities, and a good story. What was shocking about MK: DA, is the fact that the protagonist, Liu Kang, who has been in every Mortal Kombat game, was killed off. When word of this new change came to video game fans, fans flocked to buy the game. MK: DA got rave reviews and was considered the best fighting game of 2002. While John Tobias left the MK team, Ed Boon is still producing games in the redeemed franchise.

Which leads to the new Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat: Deception. Being a fan of video games and Mortal Kombat, I must say that this Mortal Kombat is THE BEST of the franchise. What makes it so great? For starters, it brings back ALL of the characters from ALL Mortal Kombats. No joke, every one of them is in this game. Of course, not all of them are in “Kombat” mode, but let me explain.

While you still have your basic tournament mode where you get to fight one on one with an opponent, defeat them, and do a fatality on them, but you have other games to play along with like Mortal Kombat: Chess, Puzzle Kombat, and my favorite, “Konquest”. Old characters like Kabal (MK3), Scorpion (MK), Sub-Zero (MK), Baraka (MK2), Millena (MK2), Jade(MK2), Raiden (MK), Sindel (MK3), Noob/Smoke (MK2), and Tanya (MK4) to name a few, are all in “Kombat” and “Konquest” mode, which makes most Mortal Kombat fans happy.

The “Konquest” mode is probably the most unique mode in Mortal Kombat, because it’s a combination of a Role-Playing game and Grand Theft Auto. You can travel wherever you want in 6 different environments or realms as the game calls them. The object of “Konquest” is to learn from fighters like Sub-Zero, Scorpion, etc. However, you can also encounter with other MK characters like Kano, Shinnok, Quan Chi, and even Shao Kahn. Some characters will have you do tasks for them in exchange for money which can be used to unlock secrets or other characters in the game. There is even a secret character, which I will not reveal, that can also be unlocked.

If you’re in search of a great fighting game, a great video game, a great Mortal Kombat game, or all three, this is the game for you. Mortal Kombat Deception is by far THE BEST Mortal Kombat game ever produced.

10 out 10 stars.
