Dec. 20, 2004 I guess Christmas is going to come again this year, just as it has for a very long time. If we think of it in terms of St. Nick then it is a time for giving and receiving. The time for setting aside our dislikes be it person, place or thing. A wonderful time when little children go to bed early without any fights or tantrums. The cat has to put in the pantry that night, lest he drink the milk left for Santa just before carrying the cookies up to your daughters room and consumming them on her bed. The horrifing scream and finding yourself baking a quick batch of cookies because your daughter is certainly NOT going to give half eaten cookies to Santa Clause. Ahhh, you laugh now, but leave the cat out on christmas eve and you will be busy baking also. HA HA HA... :) If we are thinking of Christmas as the celebration of the birth of Jesus then we are referring to a woman that as a virgin, gave birth to a baby boy. HE was born in a stable to Mary and Joseph. Sheperds and wise men followed a star in the Eastern sky over Bethelehem. The baby, wrapped in swaddleing clothes was to grow up to be hailed and hated. He was to grow up bringing a new light to this world and dieing for our sins. His time on earth gave us new light and the chance to live forever. Did I mention that Angels came down from the heavens and sang of good tidings of joy and peace of earth and good will to all men. I look around the world and I see such chaos. Fathers and boyfriends killing little babies for no reason. Mothers killing their own flesh and blood and women killing women so that they can cut the baby from the dead mother and take the baby. I see people hurting people to get to the top of the corporate ladder. I see hungry children and homeless people. And I see our brave men and women fighting and giving their lives so that we can continue to celebrate Christmas in anyway that we desire. Each year at this time we attack the stores as if we were sharks to buy presents for our loved ones. We buy turkeys and hams and olives and anything else that goes with Christmas. As we roll out of our beds christmas morning and rush to open the presents that "Santa" has left for us, we sometimes forget why we are celebrating. Those hungry children I saw on the street, the homeless that bundled together to stay warm the eve of christmas, and the soldiers that find a place out of the wind and sand long enough to think about their loved ones back home. Each of these peoples that I mention will look for something to use as a pillow to sleep on. Perhaps this year we need to take a moment and remember that we are celebrating a birthday. The birthday of a baby that grew to be our lord and savior. A baby that layed in a manger filled with straw and brought a new light and a new love into our world. He layed his head down on soft straw. Where will our hungry and homeless and our brave soldiers lay their heads this Christmas eve??? Maybe we should buy a few less toys and a few extra turkeys and hams. We as a nation could feed the hungry and warm the homeless with blankets. We could buy a pillow instead of a toy train or doll. We could purchase a hot meal for those that have none. This Christmas season, we could invite a soldier who is away from his family to sit down and have Christmas dinner with us. We can send cards and notes to them in such a quanity that the Soldiers could use th letters as a pillow. This season celebrate the wonderful blessing that you are alive and that you CAN bless another less fourtunate person. Do not look at color or religion. Do not see the different ways that we celebrate this special day. if you have nothing to give them that they can hold in their hands then send them happy thoughts and laughter. Give the homeless the warmth of your caring to cover their bodies and feed their hearts. Give these peopleyour hearts to use as pillows this year. You will find that no one misses that one toy, that one piece of pie or that one light blanket that might shield them from the cold or sand. That is what christmas is all about. The sacrifice that a baby made for us 2000 years ago when he became a man... I wish each and every one in this world peace and happiness. I wish for you the best in the new year to come. Even if you are not a celebrator of the Santa or the birth of Jesus, you can still give of your heart to the homeless and the people that are not able to be with their families. What do I want for Christmas this year... I want peace on earth in a world where there is not one hungry child, A place where hope and faith can replace fear and hate... just a little love... Merry Christmas to you all and Happy birthday, Jesus... This one is for you.........x ------------ About the author: My name is Darrel Day. I live in a small town in Iowa.
