Whatever You Do...

By Chris Falcon
Dec. 19, 2004

Dressed in black, with crumpled tissues in hand, a sudden stillness came over my cousins, as we tried not to give in to that kind of shoulder- shake that only occurs when one is not supposed to laugh.

We were listening to my aunt’s funeral sermon, but the priest began by saying that he had recently begun to suspect he was coming down with Alzheimer’s Disease and wasn’t sure he could focus on my aunt, but would try.

“She was a wonderful person, I think.” he said. “Do I know her?”

Our shoulders began to shake again.

After the mass, at the restaurant, one of my cousins said no matter how serious any given moment, everything is a mixture: all moments in life fold into one another.

While she was talking, the restaurant owner pushed a waiter out from behind a curtain, saying loudly to him, "You’re new, but we’re short- handed so just get out there and try your best. And if you make mistakes, don't worry about it.”

But then as an after thought he gave one more loud instruction. “And these people just came back from a funeral. So whatever you do; don’t laugh.”
