I Am Former Trailer Trash, Like Eminem!

By Amanda Baker
Dec. 13, 2004

When I am home alone, doing my chores and working on a manuscript, I listen to Eminem. Over the past couple of days articles have come out about his music. One article today, Eminem Fans Are A Bunch Of Crackheads By Megan Williams, bluntly put that all people who listen are illegal drug users.

I responded with this e-mail to her:

"Hi, Thank you for your enlightenment on what kind of drugs I supposedly do because I listen to Eminem. I did not know that I was a drug adict in the first place, until your fantastic article. Being a mother and wife, that has NEVER done Illegal Drug, that likes listening to Eminem, I am quite interested in your opinion, but insulting your readers?

I Identify with his music because I am trailer trash too. If your middle class ideals can't understand his raps, well, here is a kind suggestion, don't listen. Amanda Baker"

When I was growing up, I moved around quite a bit because my dad was military. The housing the military provides is quite comfortable, but when my dad retired, he could not afford nice accomidations. He moved the family into a 40ft by 70ft single wide trailer.

My bedroom was the size of a walk in closet. My mother with bi-polar disease would trap me in that room and beat me when ever a mood swing would come along. But that was just family stuff.

Children when they found out where I lived and their parents would start calling me names just because of the home I lived in. The trailer was small and clean but nobody cared about that, you are "trailer trash" because of the location.

I've seen the drug dealers in that trailer court. I've talked to the women of the night and strippers that could only afford homes in that place but I did not go down their paths, I went to trade school and am working on finishing my college degree.

Eminem did the same thing, he might have walked a very rocky road to earn his money and fame, but he simply worked hard to move from the trailer into a mansion. His music is a reflection of his own experiences.

If a writer does not write from experience, then what should they write about?

Eminem fans are not all crack heads, they are just people who like his music. And I am one of them.
