Playground For Adults

By Amanda Baker
Dec. 10, 2004

Tis' the season for drink and merriment. A season of hope and over indulgence. A season of wishing for changes and a way to bring faith closer. But it is also the season of extra weight gain.

I've been to gyms with their equipment lined up in neat rows for individuals to work individual muscle groups. I've also gone to swimming pools where individuals lap swim. There are outdoor tracks where individuals run independantly. Only a few places have real gymnasiums, but those places still have the individual work out rooms and people are so focused on their work outs that enticing them for a game is down right difficult. Also, how many people go to classes lead by teachers and get a chance to talk to the others around you while doing intricate moves to very loud music.

Everybody doing this has no time to get out there for fun. What about adult play?

There are so many adult activities that do not use exercise: for example, going to the movies, going bowling (well, there is mild exercise as long as you are not eating from the snack bar or drinking sodas), shopping, playing video games, roleplaying and dating (if you do go out it costs lots of money for an activity that might be mild exercise). Some people like going for hikes in the woods but with only about two other people, because the people hiking like quiet in the woods.

Again I ask what about play?

I love going to the kids playground with my son. I love crawling through tunnels, climbing, and if the bars would take my weight hanging upside down, but childrens playgrounds are made for children.

I remember the playground, where a person gets picked on, where you can meet a friend, make up stories acting them out, and best of all the great exercise from chasing other individuals around the jungle gym. I remember swinging, pumping my legs back and forth going so high that it seemed scary. I remember the fun I had talking with individuals that were happy about just having fun.

The places adults work out in are just not fun and they don't encourage fun either. People wonder why the adult population in America is so big and depressed. I think it is because we have so many boring adult activities: cocktail parties, small talk and drivng.

My proposal to fix this is that each city in America build an Adult sized playground. A place for adults to meet and play. Parks are just not enough, there needs to be equipment to climb on, swing sets, and spaces to feel free to use your imagination. Maybe bosses could use that mandatory fifteen minute coffee break to encourage a game in the office parking lot. Or companies could provide a half an hour to dedicate to just play. Then people would loose the weight easily with no boring individual workouts.

I think that would make the world happier and more fun for adults. Just because a person becomes an adult does not mean life always has to be taken seriously. That is my Christmas wish for everybody.
