Merry Fill In The Blank

By Lee Zelhart
Dec. 10, 2004

Okay, my brother's heart is in the right place. We were driving down the road and listening to a seasonal song on the radio. He commented he wished the station wouldn't play secular Christmas songs. The Problem? He had the radio set to a Christian family radio station and the song in question was Jimmy Durante(?) singing "Frosty the Snowman" from the cartoon program of the same name (Rankin and Bass)

I reminded my brother some people, among whom would be many ministers, who would raise Cain if some classics weren't included in the station play. Some songs are so entwined in Christmas tradition they can't be seperated from the season any more. What would Christmas be without Frosty, or Rudalph? I mean Bethleham doesn't even have White Christmases, do they?

Look, I have the attitude Jesus probably wouldn't mind a Christian radio station playing Frosty the Snowman. He would be more concerned with wither, or not the radio station was doing the will of God in general. He would be more concerned the listeners believed in Him and did what He taught. I think He would even join in and sing along. Didn't he instruct His followers to be happy? To be joyful?

He told the disciples it was more important what was in a man's heart then what he ate, or drank. I'm pretty sure he would also include what music you listened to. I don't think Rudolph, or Frosty either one have sent one person to Hell.

Sadly, as much as I love him my brother is sometimes one of those people who would strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. Okay, I'd rather smoke the camel, but that's me. My brother doesn't smoke (I'm not sure why he would be straining gnats either, but whatever floats your boat). Never mind.

I kinda like songs from old cartoon holiday shows. I like Holly Jolly Christmas, Silver and Gold(hey, who doesn't??), and Christmas Time is Here(from a Charlie Brown Christmas) as well as the jazz instumental from the same program. I kind of think Christmas songs should be a little jazzy. I like Manheim Steamroller, myself.

Amy Grant did a version of Winter Wonderland. What has that got to do with the Christmas Story? I don't think she's doomed to eternal torment for that, do you? Or do ya? Good King Wintenslaus? what's that about? Green Sleeves (the tune for What Child is This) is a traditional English folksong which actually deals with a relationship with fairies and a fairy woman.

I'm sorry, but some of those "Christian" Christmas song make me gag. Some are really downers and a drag. I like Christian music, really. I don't think you have to listen exclusively to it all the time. That's not a requirement of salvation.

I know my brother meant well. I just think he's more concerned with the form and not the content, or maybe the other way around. Otherwise, his heart's in the right place. I guess I shouldn't be too hard on him. Maybe he should be a preacher.
