Dec. 6, 2004 In this morning's local newspaper, in the letters to the editor section, are two letters from Democrats, still bemoaning the fact that the Democrats lost (once again) last month. "Bemoaning" because while they urge other Democrats to "get over it," BOTH letters whine about President Bush's win and then predict dire consequences for us all as a result. One writer says, "Some of the damage that will be done in the next four years will be irreparable; some can be mitigated and even undone. But it will take years of positive activism to turn the corner." What a bunch of hooey! And these are the people who claim President Bush won because lots of people were afraid. The other writer says, "The American people had the choice between voting as free-thinking intellectuals with passionate concerns about the future of social justice or voting as uninformed and fearful party ideologues concerned only with their personal safety." Guess which voters were which in this guy's fevered mind. Such is the tone and tenor of what passes for Democrat "thought" these days. Sixty million Americans voted for President Bush's reelection because they were either ignorant, cowards, unenlightened or placed fear above "social justice and the environment." Assuming that Americans are infantile may be the straw that broke the camel's back insofar as the viability of the Democrat Party is concerned. These two people have expressed clearly how arrogant liberals have become. If you don't agree with THEM, then you are either a blind, greedy partisan or an idiot redneck with green teeth, a shotgun rack in your pickup truck, a confederate flag hanging in your living room window, and a junked-out toilet bowl in the front yard. I write this not to HELP Democrats "get over it," but to point out the vicious bitterness many of them are experiencing as a result of their losses this cycle (and maybe to tweak and add a little bit to their disappointment.) I truly hope that liberal Democrats continue in this dead-end path to political obscurity--not because I think Democrats as a group should disappear, but because the left-wing of the Democrat Party is so destructive. These are the people who probably consider themselves to be "patriotic" but who see America as just as dangerous (if not more so) as the old Soviet Union was--especially with nuclear weapons in our arsenal. They thought (and still think) that it was equally likely that WE'D initiate a nuclear war as some tin-pot, nuclear- armed dictator would be. They "loathe" the military--at least partly because they know that a strong American military is a deterrant to the eventual institution of a socialist "utopia" that they envison for America. They hate the idea of ordinary Americans going about armed with..gasp!...real firearms, and for much the same reason. They want to legalize marijuana, criminalize peaceful, anti-abortion protests or driving an SUV, not only legalize sodomy but force everyone else to celebrate it as a "Constitutional right," and they want to outlaw any religious expression in public--especially if the religion is Christian, which many view as Marx did as the "opiate of the people." These are not opinions held by the mainstream in America so liberals tend to dismiss those with whom they disagree as "unenlightened," uneducated, or possessed of one of those awful biases that they like to throw around as pejoratives directed at anyone who dares to say anthing contrary to their idea of political correctness--homophobe, racist and religious fundamentalist, to name only a few. Presumably, being a "homophobe" or a racist or a religious fundamentalist is, to them, the equivalent of being a Nazi (or, at best, a Nazi sympathizer.) What they don't yet get is that one can oppose the militant gay agenda without being a "homophobe" and hating gays. One can oppose affirmative action (which, as it's being practiced today, is actually discrimination in another form) or oppose the tactics of Jessie Jackson or Al Sharpton without being a racist. And, one can be a "religious fundamentalist" without demanding the incarceration or destruction of all those who are not. The key here is "tolerance"--a word that the left throws around casually without really understanding its meaning. Tolerance means respecting those with whom you disagree--regardless of differences of opinion. Liberals may be the most INtolerant people in the country. College students are being flunked for expressing opinions contrary to academic orthodoxy--which tends to be mostly leftist. People are losing their jobs for politically opposing those in favor with their supervisors' leftist bent. Others are being jailed because the leftists in the abortion fight have convinced some liberal judges that abortion protests should fall under the RICO rubric, originally designed to damage organized crime. Fortunately, Americans are catching on to those tactics and are rejecting them out of hand. That may be the most hopeful sign I've observed in my time on this planet. ------------ About the author: David A.
