Where Do We Go From Here With New Technology?

By Richard Anthony
Dec. 6, 2004

Lately I’ve been thinking at what point do we become obsolete?

I mean computers, software, phones, gadgets and stuff
All become useless almost as soon as they come out now-a-days…

And when was the last time you heard that term..”now-a-days”?

So, apparently, phrases and words that I used to use are now as
Obsolete as I sometimes feel…

So, according to the dictionary, “obsolete” means no longer in use,
out-of-date and blah, blah, blah…

To me, I guess, it means I’m starting to feel my age now…

But when did I turn around and lose time?
When was the last time I didn’t have a twinge or a body ache?
When did I start kidding myself that I wasn’t going to age?
Or to change…
And, most importantly, is change good or bad?

I don’t know…I can’t remember and finally I really don’t know!

It’s funny that when you’re younger the world has no color.
It’s either white or black and everything is so clear…

But as you get older colors start to emerge…
Especially the gray…

And those convictions that you strongly felt you had…
Are no longer stable, no longer solid
They aren’t a fortress that you can make a stand with, on or against.

And although age does make our eyesight grow dimmer
It also clarifies our inner eye and mind as to what really matters.

As we grow older we learn to pick our battles better…
We begin to realize that money; fame and beauty are just illusions…
Our inner sight doesn’t battle with our will…
There isn’t that constant struggle from within.

Because they become one and the same…

So maybe getting older and making some changes are a good thing…
Maybe we exchange the inner turmoil with body aches and pains…
Maybe we gain a few pounds or lose a few hairs but gain more heart,
Gain more acceptance, more understanding of other’s beliefs, convictions and manners…

Or maybe we don’t and end up bitter, mean and just plain ugly…

I do know which way I’m choosing to go…

How about you?

About the author: Richard Anthony is a screenplay writer and has eight screenplays to his credit. He started writing in 1990, after the birth of his first son. Prior to beginning his writing career, he spent twelve years working at two different radio stations in Sacramento, California. He was an on- air personality for the morning show program at both stations. At his final place of employment, Mr. Anthony worked as an Assistant Operations Manager and Sport Director. After radio, he formed Pyramid Productions. A film/video company dealing with video and audio commercial production.

In 1998 and 1999 Mr. Anthony’s poem “What is Winning All About?” was selected by the International Library of Poetry to be placed in their anthology book of American poets for 1998. They contacted him again the following year to seek his permission for “Winning” to be included in their Millennium anthology collection. He, of course, gladly gave it.
