Dec. 3, 2004 Coming from a Charter Member of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy that headline is a pronouncement in itself. The fact is America needs the Democratic Party badly, just as it needs Republicans and their philosophy. America was founded within certain clearly defined political parameters. The Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of our government are choreographed for the two party system. Nothing will bring our system of checks and balances down faster than one political party and philosophy overwhelming the other. Based on what I’ve seen taking place since 1990, we are moving toward that disaster and the Democrats just don’t seem to get it. Recently an avid supporter of Senator John Kerry opined, and I’m paraphrasing here: ‘The Red State Voters were just too dumb to vote for John Kerry. Those of us living in the East and West Coast Blue States read better books, see better films, frequent finer restaurants and attend superior institutions of higher learning. We hope you’re happy, you deserve what you get.’ This is just one example of the rampant “Elitist Mentality” of the Democrats IN POWER. Another example of the Elitist Mentality comes from the Democrat’s beloved Hillary Clinton. On June 29th of this year she gave a little talk in San Francisco. Her audience was made up of some of San Francisco’s Elite. According to the Associated Press she proclaimed: “Many of you are well enough off that the tax cuts may have helped you. We’re saying that for America to get back on track, we’re probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We’re going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good.” The Democrats IN POWER just don’t get it and the phrase IN POWER is extremely important. The Democrats controlling the DNC are on the road to nowhere. Those IN POWER have no sacred values, no belief that can’t be amended by the latest poll, no goal except attaining office. I’m wrong, you say? Well, let’s look at some facts concerning this past election. John Kerry claimed Social Security was in serious trouble and he had a plan to fix it--Go to my website. John Kerry claimed the Bush Administration was conducting the war in Iraq all wrong and he had a plan to fix it--Go to my website. George Bush had destroyed America’s bond with its allies and John Kerry had a plan to fix it--Go to my website. Starting to get a picture here. John Kerry never once explained what his plans were, not even to the friendly press corps. I don’t want to beat a dead horse, but those IN POWER in the Democratic Party better wise up and understand a simple truth. The majority of Americans are intelligent people. We have something else that’s even more important, we have COMMON SENSE. We use it prolifically in the defense of our right to pursue happiness and enjoy our freedom. Now some would say a case can be made that Republicans are the same. ELITIST REPUBLICANS will fall on their sword defending the “Party Line.” I submit to you that a Republican, be he an ELITIST SNOB or a mad, slobbering, “RIGHT WING EXTREMIST” such as myself, will definitely go to his/her death defending the “Party Line.” Why is this any different from Democratic behavior? Because the “Republican Party Line” is based on defined “CORE BELIEFS.” Today, while doing some errands, I listened to an interview conducted by one of my favorite “Rightwing Extremist” talk show hosts, Sean Hannity. I was unable to hear the name of the gentlemen he interviewed, but the man is a paid contributor of CNN. He participates in political roundtable discussions and does op-ed pieces, I believe. He was also a major player in the Presidential campaigns of Bill Clinton. This Democratic heavyweight, with the exception of Zell Miller, is the only “Democratic Major Player” to articulate why the Republicans have been successful in the last two elections. He put it very simply and I’ll paraphrase again. He said: After the defeat of Gerald Ford by Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and his cohorts went back to the drawing board. They worked out a philosophy which would become the “Core Platform” of the Republican Party. That philosophy runs through each and every policy statement sanctioned by the Party. It guides and governs each lawmaker as he/she runs for and is elected to office. In general, those same tenets guide the lawmaker in his/her actions in office. The Philosophy is simplicity itself. Republicans across the board subscribe to, and are committed to, SMALLER GOVERNMENT, LOWER TAXATION, FAMILY VALUES AND PERSONAL RESPONSIBILTIY. There is a young man, his name is Max Burns, I believe. He contributes on a regular basis to this forum. This young gentleman is seventeen years old. He is extremely articulate, his positions are, as a rule, well thought out and he is, as he should be at this age, a Democrat. I state the latter without fear of rebuttal because someone far more intelligent and articulate than I observed: “If a person is not a Liberal Democrat through age thirty-five, he/she has no heart. If he/she is not a Conservative Republican by age forty, he/she has no brain.” I sincerely hope young Mr. Burns stays in the Democratic Party and continues to work for its betterment. I doubt seriously that the young gentleman will lose his facilities. Those professing to lead the Democratic Party at this juncture are leading it down a road of disaster. If Howard Dean is allowed to take power, the Democrats are in desperate trouble. Any political party without a set of values is destined to crash and burn. John Kerry lost this election because he had no Core Belief. The man patronized the electorate by taking any position deemed popular by the polling machine of the moment. John Kerry didn’t invent that campaign ploy himself, it’s one used for eight years by the Clinton organization. The Democrats have people who can bring the Democratic Party back to a viable force in the political arena. Evan Bayh, Joseph Lieberman and others like them have the experience and position. Young people like Max Burns can make their voices known and perhaps the so called Progressives, a.k.a. Socialist Liberals, can be driven from power. The Democratic Party needs more Thomas Jefferson’s and Harry Truman’s. It needs a little Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. Find a deep cellar and let Ted Kennedy entertain Nancy Pelosi. I can’t think of two people who deserve each other more. It’s a damn shame Tom Daschle won’t be there to join them. That’s my opinion. It’s the only one I’m qualified to give. ------------ About the author James B. Bergstad: I've explored this planet for sixty-six years. For the most part it's been a blast. I now indulge my passions of reading, writing and painting. My novel "Hyde's Corner" is awaiting publication. It is a taut period/drama set in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Sheriff Selmer Burks presides over the destruction of three families and the corruption of Hyde's Corner.
