The Vanity Of Oprah Winfrey

By Robert Paul Reyes
Dec. 3, 2004

Ronald Brockmeyer, the German publisher of "O," a magazine of erotica and soft-core sadomasochism, has lost his legal battle against Oprah Winfrey and her magazine of the same name. Brockmeyer claimed that the squeaky-clean image of "O, The Oprah Magazine" was ruining the reputation of his "O," a magazine with colorful photos of scantily clad ladies. So, in August 2001, he sued her for trademark infringement and unfair competition.

U.S. District Judge John Koelt apparently doesn't think people will be too confused by the two O's. He tossed out the lawsuit, claiming "there is no possibility of blurring in this case."

Setting aside the merits of the lawsuit, let us consider the merits of the two publications.

Oprah's "O, The Oprah Magazine" is a glossy paean to the cult of personality. Oprah's air brushed face stares at unsuspecting shoppers from the cover of every single issue of her magazine. Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but Oprah without any makeup and Oprah seen without the aid of special filters is the ugliest woman on the face of the earth. The Oprah that appears on the cover of every single issue of "O" bears no resemblance to the real Oprah. This should serve as a warning to the public that within the glossy pages of "O, The Oprah Magazine" -- they will find precious little truth.

What kind of a person names a magazine after herself? If I had the financial resources to publish a magazine I would name it Liberalism Today, The Search for Truth or the Freethinkers Journal. In other words I would name it after something that meant a lot to me. Oprah is revealing a lot about herself by naming her magazine after herself.

The "O, The Oprah Magazine" publishes stories and articles "aimed at helping women improve their lives guided by the performer's values." Women of America throw away your bibles and your self-help books, if you really want enlightenment and instant karma -- subscribe to the Oprah Magazine. Learn all about Oprah's values and at the same time make the wealthiest woman in America even wealthier.

Only four issues of the erotic "O" have actually appeared on newsstands, with two of the covers featuring tag lines that read "The Art of Fetish and Fashion." The soft-core porn publication features naked women engaged in sadomasochistic and lesbian acts. "O," the porn magazine seeks to lure its male clientele by objectifying and exploiting women.

The publisher of the erotic "O" magazine takes a more honest approach in selling their magazine. They don't issue any press releases stating that they "aim at helping men improve their lives guided by the beauty and freedom expressed by photographs of women engaged in lesbian activities."

It's my opinion that Oprah exploits her suburban female subscribers to an extent much greater than any porn publisher. She gives her subscribers nothing but "new agey" philosophy and empty platitudes.
