CS Lewis Was An Atheist

By Amanda Baker
Dec. 2, 2004

Annette Robe a woman who wrote a column for useless-knowledge.com, November 11, 2004, about Harry Potter is a woman of convictions. I wrote her a compliment about how I liked her article but did not agree with her facts about CS Lewis. I even gave her a web site to help and the article. Boy! Was I wrong in thinking that she wanted my help.

We e-mailed each other and I thought I conceeded that she might be right that CS Lewis might have been converted to Christianity by his writing pal and friend J.R.R Tolkien. I stated in the last e-mail that I would look for the Lewis autobiography since I had read in the past that he in fact was an atheist. But she was so convinced, I just gave up and moved on with my busy life.

Well, this evening she wrote back in an insulting and non-polite way. She insulted my spelling, which I know I make typos that I do not catch, and she bragged about how she told the truth. I really did not care for her language even if it was sugary sweet. Here is the e-mail I am talking about:

"So, I would imagine that two weeks has been sufficient time for you to study Lewis' autobiography - and I take it that your silence means that you concede that I was, in fact, conveying the truth - OR that it means that I was indeed right and you are now so irritated with this that you are sulking! Whichever, I care not. I do think that before you accuse anybody else of not being truthful, that YOU should properly research ALL the facts before you get on your high horse. Furthermore, I also suggest you invest in a nice big dictionary - as I happened to notice that not once, but twice in your article about Kerry or something (the article's contents do not stick in my memory - but your spelling errors sure did) where you state that Kerry made a "speach". If you look it up - you will see that "speech" is the correct spelling. Once, that would be an error, but twice would indicate that you actually believe that "speach" is the correct spelling.

See, the difference 'tween the two of us, Amanda, is that I was at least willing to let you have the benefit of the doubt and so I followed up and found, not to my very great surprise, that I was in fact quoting reliable sources - which I pointed out to you and provided you the links. You, on the other hand, have not even had the decency to concede that you could possibly be wrong.

In future, try to restrain yourself from sending unsolicited advice (that word in this context means "who asked you?") and work on your spelling before handing out your own quirky brand of judgement - unless you have solid proof that your claims will not be refuted - as it was in this case. I am sure, that after my pointing out your spelling errors, your cheeks are burning and you now know how it feels to hear something that you didn't ask to hear - even if it is true. I was polite and welcomed a debate, but I would go so far as to say that your silence booms loudly across the land as a mental image rears itself in my mind's eye of a sullen, pouting child who hasn't gotten her way.

That having been said - I now challenge you to prove that your accusation is true. I have a feeling that I won't be hearing from you again - and if I do, it will probably be an angry retort and some wild explanation that "speach" is the way they spell it in English used in other countries or on Mars. Again, I tell you - get a dictionary!!! Because no matter how you try to rationalize it, that word is NEVER spelled that way in ANY English speaking territory. I grew up in a country where UK English is taught, and now live in the US where English is only mildly different to the real deal. So be it - when in Rome and all that. I have adapted to the US English and STILL there is no way that "speach" is spelled like that. Its simply wrong.

OR (I really wonder if you are "man" enough to take on this one)...how about a battle in the forums? We could both make our cases as to whether or not Lewis was re-introduced to Christ in his Athiest adulthood (from his teens into his late twenties, early thirties he was an Athiest) by Tolkien. Then we could post our for or against articles, and let the readers decide for themselves. Hmmmm.....again, I wonder who it will be?

Have a splendid day! "

I have wrote her back, stating I feel she has issues beyond one article. I must apologize to her but for what I have not a clue. People have different opinions, and if I am wrong I do admit it.

I did check out CS Lewis's autobiography and found out that he was in fact an atheist. He loved debating religion. I felt that continuing the debate was a complete waste of my time. So, I guess my apology should be that I did not try to rub in what I had found out.

I do not want to continue the debate about CS Lewis. If she still does she is welcome to her opinions. I hope this article is a good apology, if not I really don't care!
