Colors

…butterflies’ wings, pebbles on the river bed, a valley full of flowers, the sky at dawn and dusk… fill your life’s easel with these colors

White

The scattering of all the seven colors of the rainbow creates the most immaculate color. The foam of the waves crashing on the shore, the fall of the stream from a rocky ledge, the stars of jasmine, or the blinding sun on a summer noon or the full moon, the snow on the mountains, the starched school shirt, grandma’s plaited hair, the swan taking flight, wreaths of the fragrant rajnigandha (tuberose), a child’s glee…

Green

The rain washed stretches of a valley, the hyacinth covered pond, the shades of the trees, the sonorous parrot, the blades of grass, the first tender bud of the newly planted sapling, the dark ivy clinging on to it’s hold or the moss covered edges of a pool, the marbles we fought over in the afternoon, the slopes of a tea garden or a pine forest, the glare after the glance…

Blue

The sky after the rains, or on a spring morning, the sleepy ocean and its depths, the patient kingfisher on a branch by the water, the faraway mist on the mountains, your prized satin sash, the host of violets in full bloom, or the color of your love’s eyes or your heart when he did not respond…

Red

The life blood flowing in your veins, the quivering lips, the blush spreading over the cheek, sindoor, the ruby on her finger, garden full of blossoming roses and poppies, the trickling syrup on the mouthwatering kulfi, ripe succulent tomatoes, the coral on the reef, the setting sun’s reflection on the rippling waters, the burning charcoal or your love for him…

Yellow

The golden sun, the mellowed bounty of the fields filled with corn and mustard blossom, the stretch of sunflower blooms in the breeze, the ripe mangoes, the autumnal foliage, the goldfish in the bowl or the canary in the cage, or the sole flame of a diya in the evening, the warmth in your heart spreading like the first rays of sunshine on the arrival…

Black

All the seven colors of the rainbow present, but hidden, all absorbed, the color that makes the light more bright and the white more pure, the shadow beneath the lighted candle, the night in all its beauty,- and with the promise of the dawn, the first school shoes, the cascading wet hair at noon, the kajal to speak with, the eyes beneath the lashes, the spot on the chin, the coal miners hands, the fear and the doubt accumulating in your heart…

Brown

The soil that you tread on, the soil that takes in the seed, and gives birth to the means of satisfaction for the various human senses, the tree’s bark and its unique patterns, the oil soaked earthen lamp, the farmer’s sun burnt hands or the hands that helped you stand up for the first time, the covers of kindergarten notebooks, the first baked cake, the lure of chocolate and caramel, the smell of inflated rotis on fire meandering to the study table in the evening, the smell of the first drop of monsoon on the awaiting dusty soil, the clay on the potter’s wheel taking shape, the feel of wood, the rustling of dried leaves on the pavement as you walk past in the wee hours of the winter morning, the nostalgia of visiting your native place or your school…

– do not give me a name…

Water crystal clear and sparkling, when you are parched or when you just quenched your thirst; when it comes from a running tap by the side of the path you have taken or in expensive crystal with soothing music in the background…

The uniqueness of certain colors do not allow you to give them a name, - the walks you took alone or with your friend, the moments that you spent conjuring up dreams, and the moments when you let someone tread on those dreams, the times when you were ready to fetch the stars, the moments you felt you loved…
