Remembering Princess Diana

By Lin Lin
Aug. 31, 2005

I still remember eight years ago, August 31, mother woke me up in the middle of the night and told me that Princess Diana was killed in a car crash. I could not believe my ears and thought that I was dreaming. “Impossible,” I said to myself, “such a beautiful, caring, loving person, dead? It has to be a mistake.” As later on, the reality set in, I began slowly accepting the fact that she is gone for real and we can never again catch her beauty and grace, and hear her warm and passionate voice fighting for the causes that she strongly believes in. She is taken from us, so young and so suddenly. To millions that know her, she is not just a woman, a mother, a royal figure, but a friend and savior, who determines to help those whose voices could not be heard, and passes on her strength to the sick and dying that no one else cares. There is a power within her that cannot be contained or taken away, in life or in death. Her sweet smile can heal the troubled soul and in her presence, hearts are purified and minds are rejoiced. She is like a modern saint walking among us, giving hope to the weakling, and she is a human being also with a degree of frailty and fault.

How time passes, as a little girl I watched her grand wedding on TV and dreamed that someday I too could live in a fairy tale like that. She brought fantasy into real life, but in private, she suffered alone without aid. To be happy is such a simple and common desire, yet as a public figure, she must endure her pain behind close door, and shield her sorrow from the gazing eyes. Like us, she simply wants to be loved and to enjoy a happy marriage that can last forever. The grief of betrayal and abandonment nearly destroyed her. For years, she wandered helplessly in the golden cage that was built for her, searching desperately for a way that could lead her out of this misery. She lived a royal life, yet her story and pain is so similar to ours that she is no longer a part of a fairy tale instead a real person that we may understand and sympathize with.

During the later years of her short life, she struggled to find her worth and seeking help from friends that she could really trust. There was a change in her that we could feel. Slowly she began emerging from the gray shadow that was haunting her, and her smile was brighter, her cares were lightening. She found love in the eyes of the mass public, and she felt being needed by those who have no voices. There was strength in her that she began to understand. She was born for a purpose, to make a history and change the future. She lent her voice to the mine victims and held the AIDS patients in her arms and kissed their face so that people would not fear to touch them and care for them. And she drew attention to the worthy causes that are long neglected by the public. So much more she wished to do and so many things she had long planed, yet after her tragic car crash, people mostly talking about her private life, her private pains. And slowly her charity work and her causes are forgotten. Every year that passes after her untimely death, we hear less and less about her, about her passion for the weak and voiceless, about those who need our help still. She is a legend, who should not be forgotten.

Princess Diana gives her love without boundary, without prejudice. And her story, her passion should live on and inspire a new generation. She is a fighter who does not give up without a fight and she fights for the causes that she firmly believes in. Her humanity shall move all who hear her life story, and her dignity and grace shall not fade despite of the passing years. So in a sense she did not die at all, she lives in people’s heart and there she shall stay.
