About That Mandatory Evacuation

By Judy Ramsook
Aug. 31, 2005

If you live along the path of a Category 5 hurricane that will be passing your way and the Governor of your state issues a mandatory evacuation of your immediate area, not leaving or wanting to leave can have dire consequences.

Your home can become submerged in water ultimately leaving you trapped and a victim of your decision not to leave, as what occurred to some who decided to weather the wrath of Katrina. Some of these individuals were rescued by members of the US Coastguards and others perished.

Now unless you possess superhuman strength that you will use to hold off your home from being destroyed by high winds and rising waters, the better thing to do would be to heed the warning issued by your state’s Governor, and go to the nearest emergency shelter.

Although the accommodations at these shelters will not be as luxurious as the ones you have in your home, long after the storm has moved along, at least your life would have been spared.

And at the end of it all, your loved ones who were so concerned about your well being will be happy to know that you are alive and well because you sought shelter, as opposed to staying in your home along the hurricane’s path to an uncertain fate.
