Aug. 30, 2005 Aw criminy! Here comes that Lonewolf guy again! (we might have to crack out the National Guard...) Hold your horses, don't get your tail feathers all ruffled (up), yet, because I have only sought to understand - people since my first foray at the / a personality as against the / an issue and I kinda found an explanation in the words of Brooks Atkinson... “we tolerate differences of opinion in people who are familiar to us but differences of opinion in people we do not know sound like heresy or people.” According to Erich Fromm (‘Man for Himself’) “perhaps no phenomenon contains so much destructive feeling as ‘moral indignation’ which permits envy or hate to be acted out under the guise of virtue.” I searched my heart of hearts, every mountain high and every valley low... or is it every valley high and every mountain low...? You see what happens when you look to hard... But then the pertinent question remains is Neal Who? an idiot? Someone, out of the chorus of many acolytes of the ‘church of painful painful truth ‘the church of ouch!ouch! called me an idiot , just simply ‘idiot’ and you know me I decided I wasn’t going to y’know, so this... please pay attention I don't know where your attention was in school... At the flowering of Democracy (Hey! Concentrate! Am not talking about Bill Jefferson and the others...), the flowering of democracy as in Athens... the flowering of democracy as in Sparta. So in these two early societies, it was a disparate situation okay? In Athens which was small enough for all to be heard, ordinary working people (hard working people) fishermen, jewelers, cobblers, etc... these hard working men wanted a say in determining the running of government. In Sparta however, that was unthinkable, not only because it was a much more conservative society but Sparta-class defined hierarchically structured and obviously the warrior class would not want to associated with others as would their therefore and so on... Therefore this interchange of ideas between men from all walks of life made Athens a very human world, completely different from conservative Sparta,... here it comes so listen now... Not to show an interest in public affairs and matters of state was considered so stupid, that our word, idiot, meaning a private citizen - someone who attended only to his own affairs and did not bother with those of the city... Hello?! Hey?! Hello... Is anybody listening? I would stop here but who is the idiot now? Does anyone need a map - no, what is it? That the world is a global village? So - no change that - the world is a city... who can no longer afford ‘not to show an interest in public affairs and matters of state... and to attend only to his own affairs and not bother with those of the city...' Hey! Hello! Hi... That means my good friend Mr. Neal Who? is an idiot, a wide swathe of the Democrats are idiots! Most Americans are idiots! George Dubya certainly ins’t an idiot... He chose to do Afghanistan, Iraq and maybe working to do Iran too... for someone who had been the butt of jokes and known for his zero frequent foreign flyer miles, he has shown a remarkable acumen for concerning himself with ‘...affairs of the city!’ I mean come on! America is getting creamed in everything from base ball to basket ball and you think the affairs of the public (terrorism etc) and other matter of state (poverty in Africa) are none of your business? So my good friends sometime when you think you understand it all about democracy - think again maybe you don't! Maybe you’re just being indifferent to public affairs (which we all know now transcends City Hall, New York, Menomonie, D.C and so on...)and matters of state...
