What Would YOU Do And Say As Messiah?

By John L. Waters
Aug. 29, 2005

The recently deceased philosopher and teacher Jiddu Krishnamurti was provided for and educated by the Theosophists and told repeatedly that he was The Messiah. Imagine yourself in Krishnamurti's position. What would you say? What would you do? Think about it. Use your imagination. Furthermore, as you keep on groping for answers, don't ever give up the peace.

The young Krishnamurti agonized over his fate. He eventually addressed the Theosophists and renounced his title. K lost most of his financial support, but not all of it. K continued teaching and challenging people to think for themselves. In this response the man was following Lord Buddha's advice given in the Kalama Sutta, including "Do not believe on the strength of traditions even if they have been held in honor for many generations...etc."

Imagine that all your social support was based on people's faith that you were the Messiah. Skeptics would continually be attacking you at least vocally! Your followers would be pressing on you so hard that youmight even need protection from some of them! What would you do and say to avoid disappointing or offending people who expect you to be "El Perfecto" the Perfect Man? Well, probably daily you would make the strong point that "Even every known genius is flawed, no one is perfect, and all the past men labelled "Messiah" failed to actually bring peace as the messianic prophecy promises."

even so, this truth would probably disappoint people and so as "Messiah" you would also disappoint people. People want to follow a steam-roller dream-leader who shows no defect. On the other hand, if you control enough money, you can hire lots of followers. You provide livelihood so people follow you. Poor people desperately need to earn a living. Many poor people would come running to you for employment. This isn't rocket science.

Both Krishnamurti and Buddha taught individual self-help. Study the Kalama Sutta. You will see where K got many of his ideas. As it says on the webpage arrived at by clicking on the preceding link, in our modern times "People can receive new knowledge from every direction and corner of the globe. In the process, they don't know what to believe and, therefore, are in the same position as the Kalamas once were. Indeed, it is the Kalama Sutta which will be their refuge. Please give it the good attention and study it deserves. Consider it the greatest good fortune that the Buddha taught the Kalama Sutta. It is a gift for everyone in the world."

Human effort was required, not some magical "divine power." Even so, Krishnamurti talked and wrote of "The Benediction" that he also called "The Other and "The Immensity." K wanted other people to sense the "Benediction" and a few people said they did. Buddha himself talked about "Nirvana" as a goal to be reached. Without making clear what these things actually are, this subject remains mysterious to people even today.

As Messiah you certainly would make this subject crystal clear to students who used the appropriate language. You would do this even if no one paid you any money, because a genius always works just for love, that is to say, compulsion and devotion, not just to be raking in moolah and rolling in dough. Remember how Jesus of Nazareth lived, worked, and taught as a poor man even as He was dying on the Cross.

Even if Christ is nothing but a mythic character cobbled out of many ideas and personalities, the author or authors of the gospels had some idea of what The Messiah would be like. Jiddu Krishnamurti's idea was different. What about your idea?

Think about it. Use your imagination. Furthermore, as you keep on groping for answers, don't ever give up the peace.
