Aug. 29, 2005 A group representing religious schools in California is bringing a suit against the University of California alleging discrimination against high schools that teach creationism and other conservative Christian viewpoints. They are complaining because admissions officials have concluded that high school courses using text books printed by Christian publishers challenging evolutionary theory do not meet prerequisite standards for science classes at the university. The group says the school is violating their right to free speech and religion. The expectations of this group of religious schools are so far removed from reality it is just laughable. Nobody violated their right to raise their children in a conservative religion. Nobody stopped them when they expressed their right to free speech by telling their children that evolution is wrong. But if they expect that what they have taught their children will prepare them for college biology classes they have been sorely misinformed. Their children can still get in to the University of California, but only by meeting the prerequisite standards that everyone else has to meet. Christians just don’t get it. They want to teach their children to ignore empirical evidence and still expect them to excel in science. They are so afraid that their children will learn something in public schools that will challenge the frail framework of faith that they build their own schools, and then expect taxpayers to contribute (through vouchers and other programs) to the substandard education their child receives there. When little Jeremiah doesn’t become a renowned geologist, it’s not because they taught him the earth is only 6,000 years old, it’s because the rest of the world is discriminating against him. When little Matthew doesn’t become a paleontologist it’s not because they taught little Matthew that dinosaurs and men were once contemporaries. No, it’s discrimination by those awful secularists. When little Sarah doesn’t become a dentist it’s not because they set her up for failure by not teaching her critical thinking skills. No. it’s because those atheistic animals down at that evolution loving university are discriminating against her because of her religious beliefs. Give me a break. If you want your child to attend a real university, then just have them meet the prerequisite standards like every other student is required to do. If you want to shelter them from reality for their entire childhood out of fear that they will learn something contradictory to your particular cults dogma, then don’t despair, you can always send them to a Christian university where they can get a degree in elementary education and teach pseudo-science to children at a Christian high school just like the one they went to. But don’t expect that you can choose a religious education over a secular education and find that there are no differences. If you choose to shelter them from the real world because you don’t want them to learn certain things, then don’t cry foul when they are rejected for not having learned those very same things. Don’t cry discrimination when the real issue is substandard education at religious schools. Don’t teach your child fairy tales and expect them to succeed in the real world. The real world doesn’t work that way. ------------ About the author: Wayne Adkins is a former fundamentalist christian who became an atheist after two years of bible college.
