Aug. 29, 2005 I am troubled, as I'm sure many people are, by way Lance Armstrong has been treated by the French media in their coverage of the drug test results. In the first place, there are supposed to be two sample taken from each athlete: an A sample and a B sample. If one sample tests positive, the other sample will be tested for corroboration or refutation. The fact that the other sample was destroyed makes these test results dubious at best. In the second place, there were no impartial observers present when the sample was tested-nobody representing Lance was there to ensure that protocol was followed. Third, the owners of the newspaper that "exposed" the test results also organize the Tour itself-can anyone say conspiracy? Last, we are, after all, talking about the French, who are not known as gracious losers: after all, they have been in a snit for twenty years, (which is the last time they actually won the Tour). There is a larger issue here, and that is the French people themselves. Look at the rampant, almost palpable, anti-American sentiment among the French (which is actually ironic, considering that without American blood and sacrifice, the French would be speaking German today. After all, during World War II, the two favorite verbs of the French were capitulate and collaborate. And for those who don't know what I'm talking about, read a history book). Given all these facts, I feel the results of these "positive" drug test results can be completely disregarded. ------------ About the author Bebe Enos: I was born in Massachusetts, and moved to Florida as a child; I currently live in Texas.
