Entertainment, Where Would We Be Without It?

By Judy Ramsook
Aug. 28, 2005

Hundreds of years ago when Kings and Queens wanted to be entertained, they called for the court jester, the finest singer in the land, if they wanted to hear some music and there were other things too such as sporting events, and plays, but has anyone ever wondered where mankind might be today had it not been for various forms of entertainment/amusement.

Think about it for a second. Try to visualise a world with no music, computers, video game systems, television, cinemas, books, periodicals, newspapers. Some of us might be truly bored We should be pleased to have so many forms of entertainment from which to choose.

For there is entertainment just about everywhere you happen to go these days. You want to listen to some music, turn on your radio, cd player, mp3, or more recently the IPOD mini or IPOD. Or if a certain singer or band happens to be performing in your area and you want to attend a live performance, there is that as well. And if you want something to read, there is a genre to suit just about everyone’s taste.

If you want something in the visual realm, there is so much from which to choose. There is regular television programming, cable television, video games, digital satellite, dvds, cinemas. Probably too much to keep up with, so most individuals choose the few they make the time for.

Then there are the things that bring out the fierce competitor that dwells in all of us; sporting events. Nowadays, there is a sport for everyone it seems. If someone does not like basketball, he/she may take a liking for skiing or ice skating. But with so much to choose from, again, most sports fans stick to the ones they prefer the most, be it football, soccer, tennis and so on, you get the idea.

Years may come and go, but one thing that will always remain is the constant need to be entertained. And entertainment is good, for it can take you out of a sad time in your life for a couple of hours or it can encourage you to see something you have been familiar with all your life, in a new way. And after toiling away at your place of work, isn’t it good to know that when the day is over, if you want to listen to some music, watch something on television, go to the movies or read a book, that these things are right within your reach?
