Defending Religious Teachings [The UC Lawsuit]

By Nicholas Olson
Aug. 28, 2005

I am, without a doubt, an atheist. I do not believe in any higher power, no matter what you tell me. But that does not mean that I necessarily agree with denying the rights of high school students the entrance into college.

According to AP: "The Association of Christian Schools International, which represents more than 800 schools, filed a federal lawsuit Thursday claiming UC admissions officials have refused to certify high school science courses that use textbooks challenging Darwin's theory of evolution. Other rejected courses include "Christianity's Influence in American History."

These kids deserve as much a chance to get into college because, essentially, you can take courses to make up for the lack of education. Besides, shouldn't we all want for everyone succeed, regardless of their religious preference? That, by the way, includes the discrimination of people who choose not to believe.

If the University of California is truly guilty of discriminating against these students, it should check with the regulations as far as receiving public monies for their institution. However, if the ACSI is trying to make a bigger deal of something that all students, like the under-educated who went to schools without the required curriculum, then they should be ashamed of themselves for trying to my a mountain out of a mole hill.

I guess we will just have to wait to see if the media really cares about this deal. So far, so good. Just try to remember- there are two sides to every story.
