Aug. 27, 2005 Do you sometimes get the feeling that some of your friends, relatives and co workers are a bit absentminded or maybe they are hearing what you are saying but not actually listening. Say, for example you are having a conversation with a friend about how high the moon in the sky is or any other subject of your choice, and a couple of days later you bring up the subject you were discussing that time ago when you thought your friend was truly listening to what you were saying. What if at this time, your friend, instead of recalling the conversation you had earlier, says, huh? Would you instantly become annoyed knowing now that your friend was not listening to a word you were saying, but he/she heard you. For in order for someone to remember the spoken word, first he/she has to actually listen. Sure we hear sounds everyday, sounds that we tend to take for granted because we have grown so accustomed to hearing them. Take the sound of the rain for example, or the coffe maker as it brews your carafe of java. But when someone takes the time to have a conversation with you, that’s where the hearing should stop and the real listening should begin. For, if you had something to say, you would want your friend to drop everything and listen to what you have to say too. And isn’t if great knowing that someone took the time to actually listen to what you had to say, if in fact he/she did so? If you happen to be fortunate enough to gain a friend who does listen as opposd to just hearing the words that are leaving your lips, hang on to him/her, for in a world where most people are busy multi-tasking with even their thought processes in high gear, a good listener is hard to find. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
