Our Sympathy Belongs To Natalee Holloway, Not Aruba

By Nicole M. Dolbin
Aug. 26, 2005

I don't really like to get involved in such controversial arguments, but I can't keep quiet any longer.

I am a 20 year-old female and I am absolutely frightened by what happened to Natalee Holloway. From what I have read about this admirable young woman, she reminds me very much of myself. Except for the fact that it is very likely that Natalee will never get to be 20 years old. I am not sure of the age of the other writers on this site, but I'm not sure if some of you realize the maturity of some young people today.

I'm sure every single person whom has ever graduated remembers how free they felt that day when they received their diploma, even if some of these people didn't have plans for college, work or anything else. After 12 years of working hard, graduates rightfully feel as though they deserve to take a trip with their friends to celebrate their new freedom.

This year, Natalee Holloway decided that, after working even harder than some, she was going to travel to Aruba with her friends before starting Medical School in the fall. Now, think about this--Natalee was accepted into this program with scholarships. She must have worked so hard during her 12 years of school. Is it fair to say that she deserved to go on a big trip after high school graduation just like the thousands of other high school students do every single year now? I sure think so.

Now, let's think about Beth. Her daughter worked so hard in high school and was well on her way to a very bright future. If her daughter was able to make such wise decisions, why not let her go out and experience a little bit of the world before beginning college? There would be chaperone's attending the trip, and since most of these trips are school sponsored (I don't know how many of you knew this, but the class officers and guidance counselors usually find different packages designed just for high school groups in order to provide a fun and safe time.)

I don't know what some people are thinking, but it is absolutely absurd to say so many awful things about Natalee or Beth. This young woman who was given a chance to have a wonderful life was taken advantage of. Sure, maybe she was naive and too trustworthy. But when did being a nice person become such a bad thing?

To care even a little bit about those 3 slimeballs in Aruba, who undoubtedly had everything to do with her disappearance is even more absurd.

Any mother out there who cares about her children would be doing the same exact things Beth has. She wants to find the beautiful young woman she created so they can both go on with their lives.
