Aug. 26, 2005 Mr. Grimes and Nicholas Hughes seem to like to deal with numbers and statistics and as a response to your article I will respond in kind. In WWII, when Hitler was massacring thousands of Jews, 413,000 American men and women died trying to help right a world that seemed encased in death and darkness. Despite this overwhelming number the majority of Americans were supportive because of Hitler’s barbaric acts and absolute cruelty. Now, fast forward to today and here we have the exact same kind of tyrant, only now we have two of them – Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein – and the numbers of people killed is tripled. Bin Laden took it upon himself to right our society and our evil ways by murdering thousands of people. A religious fanatic, he felt righteous in his hatred and glee at our sorrow. Saddam Hussein equals Hitler in his absolute disregard for human life. So horrible was his reign that the Iraqi people feared even saying his name. An Iraqi diplomat stated it perfectly in BBC news, “Saddam is a dictator who is ready to sacrifice his country, just so long as he can remain on his throne in Baghdad." He has killed, raped, tortured, and mutilated his own people and neighbors for over two decades. According to a 2001 Amnesty International report, "victims of torture in Iraq are subjected to a wide range of forms of torture, including the gouging out of eyes, severe beatings and electric shocks... some victims have died as a result and many have been left with permanent physical and psychological damage." Here’s another statistic for you, Saddam has had forty of his very own family murdered. Had enough? Of course you haven’t because, according to you, Mr. Olsen, we are “tearing a country apart and killing tens of thousands of innocents so you can live your life free”. Answer me this; How can we possibly tear apart a country that was never united with Saddam Hussein as a ruler? If we were to leave now then every single soldier’s death would be in vain. My frustration with a lot of Liberals is that if our government does something about such blatant genocide we get condemned as is evident in the countless of protests across the nation, by our own people no less, however if we do not do anything we are critiqued as being selfish and arrogant (This was actually said to me by a group of Liberals a month after the 9/11 attacks. According to them we actually deserved what we got. America apparently puts itself on a pedestal and has little to no regard to anyone outside our borders.) I can imagine the grin that is spread across Bin Laden’s face at the fact that our very own people seem to hate our government as much as he does. How incredibly disturbing. Cindy Sheehan, a name that will probably be forgotten in a few months time, is currently outside Bush’s ranch protesting the war. She demands that he speak with her, yet what she and every single Liberal seems to forget is that HE HAS! Two months after the death of her son, Bush met with her and other grieving families, but apparently that wasn’t enough. Nothing ever seems to be. Again I will give you a few facts about her son, the cause of this protest. Despite the accusations of his mother that he was “tricked” into joining and promised a job as chaplain’s assistant that he never received, Casey Sheehan actually reenlisted in the Army when he was twenty-four years old. This is after he was apparently fooled. He received the Bronze Metal for his actions and actually volunteered to be a part of numerous missions. He was a hero who tragically died and should be honored. I cannot condemn Cindy Sheehan for her grief. I do not know what I would do if I were in her position, but in her sorrow she has cast aside her husband, who does say their divorce has nothing to do with her obsession but the timing is questionable, and is ignoring her two other children. I deeply sympathize for her loss, however what I have read about her son makes me think how shamed he would be that she is stomping on what he fought for and believed in. Her own family states that they do not support her beliefs and yet she is already being called a hero by so many Liberalists when, in her grief, she is dishonoring her son. You both are saying that we, as Conservatives, are nothing but brainless followers and then critique us for “repressing” those who speak out. As a response I simply scoff. Karen Hughes was speaking her mind, speaking out what she believed in but since she’s in support of the war she’s nothing but a lemming following the crowd. Whoops guess I am to. You applaud those you agree with but lambaste those you don’t. In this aspect you, my dear, are a hypocrite. You call us fools for supporting our government and in turn I call you a walking contradiction. I’ll even give you an example. Mr. Grimes spouts that Cindy Sheehan, “as a mother” should be respected for standing for what she believes in and then in the same breath disparages Terri Schiavo’s parents for desperately fighting for her life. This is the very reason why I, as a Conservative don’t bother raising my voice. The very moment I do, I have hundreds of Liberals breathing down my neck spouting inconsistent drivel. For all that’s good and holy SHUTUP ALREADY! I will be the first to admit that I do not completely agree with all of President Bush’s choices. I’ll even go one step further and say that some of the Liberal views have changed my way of thinking. I am curious, though, as to what solutions the Liberals would be willing to provide for the destruction Saddam Hussein caused on Iraq or what you would say to the thousands of people that lost a loved one in the 9/11 bombings. Tell me, do you honestly believe that by staying out of Iraq and “peaceably” twiddling our thumbs talking and debating about what should be done would have gotten anything accomplished?
Contrary to what you may think Conservatives are not blind idiots that are being led down the path. It just so happens that our views differ from yours and that apparently gives you license to call us and meek and stupid. I can already hear the impatient sighs and cursed mumblings against my beliefs and values. Save yourself the time of an angry response and consider the opinion returned.
