Aug. 25, 2005 The high mindedness of Mohandas Gandhi and the Dalai Lama derives from the high mindedness of the Buddha and other spiritual teachers. The high explosives of our reckless age blast their light and other immense energies into our consciousness as we watch movies depicting the testing of nuclear devices and the total destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In every nation today the consciousness of saints is truly in demand to steer humanity onto a safe and sane survival course. Great IQ intelligence is not enough. Present schools reward high IQ children whether they are learning about the saints or not. In fact, when he was a small boy Jiddu Krishnamurti was beaten with a cane every day by his schoolteacher in India. Jiddu was considered very stupid. Yet Jiddu Krishnamurti grew up to be a great spiritual teacher. Krishnamurti's teachings are legendary and they amplify the teachings of The Buddha. Concerned young people need to take note, and help put each school on a safe and sane survival course. Impatient and punishing present pedagogical traditions are not the answer. Profound changes are needed. The Law of prophets and saints is empathy and compassion, not abusing the slow who cannot move so fast. Empathy is a strong feeling that makes a savior preserve the safety of any person or object under attack. For example, the good shepherd faces the lion and prevents that beast from killing poor helpless sheep. Even if he didn't own the sheep, the good shepherd would face the lion. Empathy isn't about calculating profits and making money. Empathy is a strong feeling that makes you save lives even when they can't pay you any money or even thank you for your efforts. High IQ intelligence has invented monstrous weapons. High IQ intelligence by itself is genocidal. To save humanity will take culturing empathy in children as well as integrating strong empathy with other strong faculties in millions of gifted leaders. This integration will produce the messianic culture, the long-prophesied society of peacemakers and peacekeepers. Monster weapons make it imperative for this new culture to appear all around the world as soon as possible. All governments need to start giving jobs and liberal stipends to children and adults who demonstrate strong empathy. This clear support will show everyone clearly that empathy is as valuable as high intelligence. Then, rather than promoting the mentality that abuses empathetic children like Jiddu Krishnamurti, the new messianic governments and schools will reward them highly. Hey look. Intelligence got humanity into this WMD mess. Empathy will get humanity out of it. All the other exits from global human doom are bolted shut. Mere smartness won't save us. Arguing this point or that point is merely an intellectual activity. Empathetic activity is taking care of creatures which are threatened, because their suffering is felt by the empath. If smart intellect over-rides empathy, then intellect is a monster, because intellect doesn't prevent the cruel use of weapons. The safe and sane balance between high IQ and high empathy needs to be struck in schools where the minds of future parents, teachers, and other social leaders are being formed. Children's brains develop most when they are younger than seven. Each day even the brightest young children need to be taught empathy and rewarded for showing empathy. Just like language, mathematics, and music skills, empathy develops gradually with practice. Balance is how in the messianic era of peace, even the brightest leaders will be like good shepherds, and take good care of all their subjects. This Christ Rule of compassion is the rule of good kings and is indeed the Lord of Lords.
