Aug. 21, 2005 The search for Latoyia Figueroa, the missing African American/Hispanic young lady whose story was brought to the attention of the mass media by bloggers and Internet columnists, came to a sorry conclusion. Police discovered the remains of the missing 7-month pregnant lady and immediately arrested the father of her unborn child. First, I would like to express my condolences to the friends and family of Latoyia, who are grieving over the death of a beautiful young lady. Second, I extend kudos to the bloggers who demanded that the major networks cover the Latoyia Figueroa disappearance. If it weren't for these bloggers, she would not have received any coverage. Third, I would like to scold the media that goes gaga over the incoherent mutterings of a Cindy Sheehan, but virtually ignore the many missing minorities. Whining white women like Cindy Sheehan and Beth Holloway Twitty get tons of media attention, while African American and Hispanic activists are dismissed as insignificant malcontents. Rest in peace Latoyia Figueroa, your death was not in vain, it demonstrated the racial inequality that still exists in America. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger and has written over 100 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
