Aug. 20, 2005 I’ll bet there’ll be some out there who’ve never heard of the Woodward Dream Cruise. The Woodward Dream Cruise is one of those events that just happened, no one planned it, no one owns it, and no one controls it. It attracts 1.7 million people from around the world who’re interested in cars. The Woodward Dream Cruise is 16 miles of cars, cars and more cars. It will attract 40,000 cars some will do the cruise from the city of Pontiac Michigan to the city limits of Detroit ending at eight-mile road, [yes, Eminems eight-mile.] Some will be on display in Shopping center parking lost, driveways, in every conceivable spot to park a car. Woodward Avenue from The Phoenix Center in Pontiac Michigan to beyond eight-mile road in Detroit shuts down from 9:am to 9:pm August 20th. The history of the Dream Cruise is unique. It was something that just happened, it wasn’t panned, it started with a group of wrenches, [a term used by automotive aficionados aka backyard mechanics.] Displaying their home crafted cars to other wrenches. It was never intended to become the major event each year in Michigan. It grew into it in a matter of eleven year. It isn’t unusual to see a Ford Motor Company Vice President discussing a paint job with a Maco painter, or a senior GM engineer listening to a novas mechanic explain a new configuration of a custom made carburetor. The Carnival style Woodward Dream Cruise covers nearly 80 square miles, displays 40,000 automobiles accommodates nearly two million spectators and participants and unofficially lasts for a week. It’s perhaps the largest single event in two countries, the US and Canada, [yes Canadians drive cars.] Windsor Canada is included in the Detroit Metropolitan area for many of its events. Windsor is located on the Detroit River bank just south of the city of Detroit and they have much in common. The beauty of the Woodward Dream Cruise is no government agency can take charge, charge admission, or tax the event. The only official organization is at the staging area where the cars line up to wait their turn at the cruise down Woodward Ave, and the various village police who patrol the 16 miles of Woodward Avenue. Otherwise, the accommodations of displayers, spectators, and vendors make it an event with few incidents. The Woodward Dream Cruise is truly a lesson in mans humanity to man. It’s so spread out it is each ones responsibility to respect others property and persons. There’ve been incidents reported of citizens policing when necessary. This is a lesson for every politician, respect, consideration, negation, and compromise can do a lot more than laws no one will abide by or enforce. Detroit Michigan is all about cars. I doubt any city in America could accommodate a Woodward Dream Cruise style event. The love of cars is perhaps the guiding factor in the unprecedented success of the Woodward Dream Cruise.
