Aug. 17, 2005 Does President Bush enjoy his holiday on his Texas ranch these days? With a mother of a killed soldier residing in his neighbourhood, not thinking about leaving before she has spoken him about his Iraq policy. With the draft of a new Iraq constitution that seems to be in an impasse. Logical consequence: the withdrawal of American troops is out of the question as long as things don´t get stabilised. Which won´t be the case for many, many years anyway (another 43 people killed Wednesday August 17th). And the problems are only getting worse for the President: a majority of the American citizens now have the opinion it wasn´t that smart to start a war against Iraq. Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Colin Powell admitted already some time ago his ´proof´ of weapons of mass destruction he presented at the UN, February 2003, wasn´t a proof at all. Painful ... But worse of all: there´s a new headache dossier waiting for the President: Iran. What to do with the Ayatollahs who don´t listen to international community and continue producing uranium? For peaceful purposes or for producing nuclear weapons? The second option is very well possible, but still ... Is this single possibility a reason to attack Iran? It might be as far as President Bush is concerned, he stated last weekend. Will the Americans support him in this again? I really don´t think so. Will Iran be conquered that easily like Iraq? Forget it. Logical conclusion 2: Iran could be the second swamp when President Bush puts his words into action. What to do then? I´m not a politician, fortunately. What I have understood is it takes at least five to ten years before Iran would be at the point it may have produced a nuclear weapon. It´s under permanent control of the UN watch-dog that must prevent the distribution of nuclear weapons. President Bush should slow down a little with expressing threats of attacks. Otherwise, he surely gets stuck in an Iran swamp at the end. Meanwhile, he has to take care he doesn´t get permanently stuck in the Iraq swamp. There are more pleasurable ways to enjoy ones holiday ... ------------ About the author Johan Peters: I'm a freelance journalist/editor from Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
