A Moscow/Beijing Axis?

By Craig Chamberlain
Aug. 17, 2005

For the first time ever Russia and China will be conducting joint military exercises. The exercises are not very large, but the message is clear. From Russia it is: Take us seriously, from China it's: we want Asia. Russia's new Tsar Vladimir "the Impaler of Democracy" Putin is working with the communist Chinese(after all he was a communist) to create a new power alliance.

The timing of this is no coincidence. We are in Iraq, hunting down bloodthirsty terrorists, and rightly so. We are worried about Iran building a bomb, and stopping North Korea. All of these are, of course, legitimate security concerns for the United States and we should be worried about them. But China wants to be the power, in both military and economic terms, in Asia and Russia wants to be a world power again.

These exercises are a little advertising to the world. Watch out. After all China is doing everything it can to make our position in Asia difficult. It keeps making threatening gestures to Taiwan, and refuses to rein in North Korea. A satellite state that they could control with a word if they wanted to. But they want us in six party talks that won't go anywhere in the long run.

Chinese dominance of Asia, and the reemergence of an undemocratic Russia won't be of a benefit to anyone except Putin, and the Chinese Politburo. China would threaten, Taiwan, Japan, and anyone else it wanted.

The best way for the U.S. to counter this is for closer relations with India. A nuclear power, a democracy, and a regional power with a faster growing economy than the Chinese. The Bush adminstration has made some headway in this area, but not really enough. A new relationship with India is needed to counter the China/ Russia alliance. A new alliance with India could also replace our worthless relationship with Europe, that has been dead since before the cold war ended.

It's time to take a closer look at Asia and make sure something doesn't happen when our back is turned.
