Michael Myers’ Legacy May Turn Into A Big Pile Of Crap

By Eric Schomburg
Aug. 17, 2005

On October 19th, 1957, an innocent child was born. Raised in the suburbs of Haddonfield, Illinois, he became the ideal son. However, something would lurk in that innocent child’s mind. A demon? A curse? Does it matter? The child would be one of the best known icons of horror film history. His name is Michael Myers.

Michael Myers was, and I do mean WAS, one of the most frightening figures in movie history. Unlike Jason, Michael was more like a brutal phantom, than a ruthless killer with no motive except to kill. Michael used patience, like a sniper or a serpent. Watching the "figure" known as Michael Myers in his pale, emotionless face, gazing through windows to watch his helpless preys was scary to watch, because when the prey would turn around and maybe catch Myers watching, he would disappear. Halloween didn’t have much blood and left a chill in your body just watching it. The brilliant directing by John Carpenter has been "borrowed" from other horror directors. One of the innovative shots is when you can see over the shoulder of Michael Myers, and the shot where you would look through Michael Myers’ point of view with his mask on, you can literally see through the eyes of the mask as if you were Michael Myers.

What is brilliant about Halloween and the Michael Myers character is that he is rarely unmasked, but when he is the scary fact is he looks perfectly normal. He’s not burnt and scarred like Freddy, he’s not deformed like Jason, and he doesn’t have body parts missing like Leatherface. In fact, Michael Myers looks like the boy next door.

Halloween was a low budget film that made millions, it was a success. The story about a crazed madman who stalks Jamie Lee Curtis for no apparent reason was a hit, but, unlike a lot of horror movies, there WAS a reason why he went after Jamie Lee Curtis. Fans were shocked when Halloween II revealed that Michael Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis’ character, Laurie Strode, were in fact siblings. The story made sense, Michael Myers killed his first sister in the first movie, and now he is going after the second. It was apparent that Michael Myers’ mission was to kill his family, but why?

In Halloween 4: Return of Michael Myers, the fans were introduced to Jamie Lloyd, played by Danielle Harris, who is the daughter of Laurie Strode. Jamie is only a child, which makes the tension between Michael and Jamie even more extreme. Michael comes back from a coma to kill his niece, but alas, he fails. In Halloween 5: Revenge of Michael Myers the continuation of Michael’s mission to kill his family remains; however, it also introduces fans with a glimpse in to Michael’s origin of how he became the psychopath. In one of the scenes it shows Michael ready to kill a merchant on a boat; however, before he could get a chance he passes out as if his coma came back. All of a sudden a year goes by. Despite that a year went by, the merchant still has Michael on his boat, which didn’t make much sense to me, because I would have dumped his body over the boat a long time ago. Ironically, Michael Myers recovers from his "coma" and introduces fans to his symbol, the throne symbol.

6 years after the events of Halloween 5, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers was released. This would be a defining moment in the history of Michael Myers. Despite that many fans didn’t care much for it, this movie would be very important. Unlike "Jason goes to hell" which was supposed to tell how and why Jason Voorhees became an unstoppable killing machine, Halloween 6 introduces, elaborates and explains how and why Michael Myers has the will to kill. The story picks up from Halloween 5, and a fine job the writers did. They explained why Michael Myers has frequent comas and why they only occur after Halloween is over. It also explains the symbol on Michael Myers’ right wrist. The story is Michael Myers was just an innocent child when a cult like group plagued the young boy with the curse of throne. The curse of throne is a combination of genetic biochemicals [focus on the bottles of fetuses when the heros are in the asylum] and psychological influence. Psychological influence, you say? Let me explain, since Michael Myers first killed when he was six years old it was obvious that his Id was stronger than his Ego; in other words, his primary instincts were stronger than his compassionate instincts. The genetic biochemicals could explain why Michael cannot die, nor talk. Of course, I’m not the writer of Halloween [I wish I was], so I can’t claim that statement to be fact, but just a theory.

The downfall about Halloween 6 is the confusing ending. All we get is Dr. Loomis, played by the late Donald Pleasence, screaming in agony and then a shot of a pumpkin with a menacing grin. Even I was saying, "what the hell just happen?"

3 years later, Halloween: H20 would be released. This movie was another important film, because it brings back the grudge match everyone wanted to see. Laurie Strode vs. Michael Myers. To be concise, Michael Myers gets his head cut off by Laurie; thus, the end, or at least we thought, of the franchise of Halloween. While the movie was short, it did have a good ending for the demise of Michael Myers. A sense of relief was filled. That is, until Halloween: Resurrection was released.

Halloween: Resurrection is by far the WORST Michael Myers movie ever. The beginning was mediocre, the ending was stupid, the story was embarrassing, and Michael Myers was no longer a scary being in horror films. I used to think that Michael Myers was more of a badass than Jason, that is until I saw this movie, and then I saw Freddy vs. Jason.

I understand that they are going to make another Halloween movie. My first thought was, "get over it!" I think it is sad that Moustapha Akkad still has to drag Michael Myers out and try to "scare" fans into thinking that Michael Myers is a badass villain. The worst thing Moustapha Akkad could ever do is not pay attention to what he and his staff are doing with the story and the character. Michael Myers is a focused killer; therefore, he should stay that way. In Halloween: Resurrection Michael Myers kills his sister, Laurie Strode, and kills a bunch of moronic teenagers that happen to do a reality tv show at Michael Myers’ house. Just the tagline makes you want to squint in pain.

In case anyone who is affiliated with the next Halloween movie, please heave my warning, DON’T LOSE FOCUS ON MICHAEL’S GOAL! In case you forgotten, Michael’s goal is to kill his bloodline; therefore, he still has two more people to kill. The baby from Halloween 6 and of course his nephew from H20. Another warning, DON’T TRY TO PLACE MICHAEL MYERS IN A POP CULTURE ENVIRONMENT! It’s no secret what Halloween: Resurrection’s goal was to bring pop into Halloween, because if there is popular people mixed with a popular concept, at the time it was reality tv, then more revenue would come in. Well, we saw how that turned out, don’t we?

As of right now the story for Halloween 9 is a mystery; however, the title of the movie is Halloween: Retribution, which means punishment or reward, which is a very interesting concept considering that we are dealing with Michael Myers. A lot of rumors have spread on what the story may be. One rumor was that Dr. Loomis’ son would take his place to search and destroy Michael Myers for good. If this story is true, then this movie is going to suck already. Dr. Loomis appeared to me as a loner and he should stay that way; therefore, no son.

My idea is to bring back John, Laurie Strode’s son, played by Josh Hartnett. Of course, Josh won’t play John, because apparently he doesn’t like horror movies. Right, Josh, and why were you in Halloween H20 again?

Of course there have been some talk about Michael possibly be going up against Freddy and Jason in the sequel to Freddy vs. Jason, but I think that Michael Myers needs to redeem himself from the crap-fest that was Halloween Resurrection and have a good solid horror movie that is complete with Michael being the menace that he is known to be. The writers need to keep up with the storyline and Michael’s goal in killing his family, and having actors who can act and not people like Busta Rhymes and Tyra Banks. I’m sorry, they should keep their day jobs.

In all honesty the legacy of Michael Myers has been tarnished. Just like Jason’s legacy was tarnished with "Jason goes to hell," Michael Myers’ legacy was tarnished by Resurrection. However, unlike Michael Myers, Jason’s legacy as a horror film icon was redeemed with "Freddy vs. Jason," proving that Jason can still kick ass and take names; however, Michael’s judgement day will come next year. Halloween: Retribution is Moustapha Akkad’s last chance at redemption in writing the legacy of Michael Myers. If Halloween: Retribution is another pop-fest of pop icons who only possess 15 minutes of fame, then Michael Myers’ of redemption would be over.

Michael Myers is a slasher icon, but by 2006, he may be a slasher joke. Let’s pray that Dimension films and Moustapha Akkad have the decency not to let Michael Myers’ legacy turn into a big pile of crap.
