Aug. 15, 2005 So President Bush's administration says that the policy of propping up tyrants didn't work and the "new ethical foreign policy" is only to support democratic leaning states in the future. Sure George...tell it to the marines...or, better still, to the Saudis. Saudi Arabia was created when the fanatical Nijd tribe unfurled its wings and spread out both east and west. When they first took the two holiest cities of Islam, Madina and Makkah, there was a world wide outcry from ordinary Muslims, as these "Wahhabis" virtually razed the two cities to the ground, due to their fanatical ascetism. They even tried to destroy the prophet's mosque at Madina, but were finally stopped by the outrage of Muslims world wide. In the first years after their conquest of the larger part of the Arabian peninsula, only those who were considered true muslims--the Wahhabis--were allowed to complete the Hajj, or once in a lifetime trip to Makkah. The Saudi Wahhabis have mollified a bit since those days--but not too much. For the sake of stability in the oil sector, the U.S. gives its whole hearted support to a regime that still practices amputations on thieves ( there was the fairly recent story of a Sudanese man who had his right arm and left leg amputated for petty theft), doesn't allow Christians to worship or build churches, refuses to let foreigners own property or businesses, and treats women as if they were animals rather than human beings (Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world where women are not allowed to drive). In addition, alcohol is banned, and any non Muslim seen eating in public during the fasting month of Ramadan, will very likely be thrown in jail for a few months, prior to being deported! Oh yes...and the punishment for adultery is death! It is well known, that in the aftermath of 9/11 Bush secretly got his Saudi pals out of the country incognito, and also that the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. was on such intimate terms with the Bush family, that he was affectionately known as "Bander Bush". Thirteen of the fifteen hijackers on 9/11 were Saudis: fanatical products of a racist education which teaches that it is a religious sin to even shake the hand of a Westerner! What was Bush's response? He decided to invade Iraq, a country that clearly had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks! Imagine if thirteen of the terorists had been Iraqi! We would never have heard the last of jingoistic self justifications for going to war! If Bush and his acolytes are serious about their new "ethical foreign policy", they will begin to boycott the odious Saudi regime immediately. However, that isn't going to happen. There is too much money at stake and GWB, like all his predecessors before him, would prefer to turn a blind eye to the abominations that go on in that country in the name of religion. Money talks, and its sweet siren song has been and remains far too captivating for present and past U.S. administrations to resist. ------------ About the author Jon Aristides: Read, 'The Black Scarab of Amun-Ra'.
