Jerry Falwell Goes On A Diet

By Robert Paul Reyes
Aug. 13, 2005

Proverbs 23.21 "For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty"

The Bible condemns gluttony in no uncertain terms, but you will never hear Jerry Falwell preach against this sin for obvious reasons. The rotund minister prefers to rail against homosexuality, even though Jesus Christ surrounded himself with men and never uttered a single word against homosexuality.

At the age of 72 the Reverend Jerry Falwell announced he has started a diet and hopes to lose 50 pounds. He joked that it would be difficult for him to give up certain foods. That's like a preacher declaring that he has renounced the sin of lust, but that if he sees a cute young girl sitting in the front pew, he may be tempted to commit fornication with her.

Falwell may joke about the sin of gluttony, but the Bible equates a glutton with a drunkard. I'm tired of these hypocritical evangelists who pick and choose which sins to condemn.

I don't consider the Bible the "Word of God", but if these clowns really believe in the inerrancy of scripture, they should preach against pride, gluttony and selfishness a hell of a lot more than they preach against abortion and homosexuality.

Why does Jerry Falwell feel compelled to share with the world that he has started a diet? What's next, will he issue a press release the next time he has a bowel movement?
