Aug. 12, 2005 George and Jennifer Hyatte, the married (but not really married) couple dubbed Bonnie and Clyde were captured at a hotel in Columbus, Ohio. I guess I can understand their bold behavior done in the name of…love? How does love develop between hardened prisoners and their newfound civilian love puppies? I find this whole process remarkably strange, if not insane. I am acquainted with an individual that divorced their lifelong mate and married a life-sentenced mate. What a trade. The new mate is serving a life sentence for murder. Nice, huh? This acquaintance is about twenty years older than their homicidal mate. What? What do you think it’s all about? If you are a shrink or know something about insanity, please write me with some kind of explanation. I have read a couple of theories. One theory suggests that men and women alike are attracted to bad-boys or bad-girls. They like that rebel image given by lawbreakers. I don’t buy it. It might be a theory, but a darn goofy one. Another theory is that prisoners are naturally scam artists and are able to say all the right things. They pretend to know what a woman wants to hear, or what a man wants to hear. They sweet-talk their victim into thinking that they’re (the victim) the greatest things on earth since the creation of apple butter. This theory makes some sense to me…not a bunch, but some. According to Sheri and Bob Stritof of “Your Guide To Marriage” there are a number of reasons women marry prisoners: "1. Identification with aggressive personality 2. Rescue fantasies 3. An act of compassion .4. A way of showing sympathy for a political cause or for an outcast 5. A way to be the center of attention and in the limelight 6. Fills need to be needed and to feel important 7. A desire for danger or thrills 8. Out of a sense of rebellion 9. As a ticket to citizenship 10. Fills void caused by failure of, disappointment in, or lack of romantic relationships 11. Allows marriage and motherhood without having to deal with a husband everyday." Falling prey to a scam artist is not a new happening. Many people fall into traps created by smooth-talking sociopaths, but the idea that a person would make a major commitment of marriage to these silver-tongued prison gurus is unfathomable. The majority of people (according to “The Bell Curve”) are of normal intelligence. That being said, a person with normal intelligence ought to be able to make normal/rational decisions, right? Women or men, who marry hardcore prisoners are not making rational decisions. Anecdotal studies indicate that many women, who have been married to prisoners, eventually released, end up meeting a violent ending to their lives or they end up divorced.
It’s another conundrum in this life of ours. If my wife goes to prison, I have full intentions of sneaking a set of cookware to her. I can’t miss a home-cooked meal and I’ll be damned if I’ll let prison be an excuse not to cook.
