The Invasion Of Iraq Was A Tragic Waste Of Time

By Jon Aristides
Aug. 11, 2005

So we were right after all. I am referring to those people who always said that the invasion of Iraq was a tragic waste of time. Now, it seems that Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeldt are putting their major faith in the fledgling Iraqi constitution, and there is a sense that when this has been framed, the job of the U.S. is done and the military can begin to pull out. Will this blatant distortion of the facts be enough to convince even those hard-liners who have always believed everything that these three men have uttered?

First, the constitution doesn't matter a damn. The insurgency is threatening to spiral out of control and it is the success or failure of this rebellion that will decide the future of Iraq now that the U.S. has got fed up and wants out.

August 2005 threatens to become one of the deadliest in the history of this war for the American army. Yet it is precisely now that the U.S. wants out from a dangerous and essentially unresolvable situation with some face saving device. Leave the natives with some 'peace in our time' type document and get the hell out! Hasn't the U.S. learned anything from the deposing of the Shah in Iran?--or the hanging of the "King" that was imposed on the Iraqis by the British after the end of the First World War? The indigenes will decide for themselves what they want post withdrawal and once the U.S. is out of the loop, their opinion is hardly likely to be highly sought after by the local people, who still view the U.S. military as an army of occupation. No doubt the few 'yes men' who are left in influential positions will continue to call on the U.S. for help even after withdrawal--and the media will inflate the importance of their opinions, so they seem to be the legitimate government of Iraq, rather than a few puppets of America, held in scorn and contempt by the vast majority of the Iraqi people.

What happened to the pledge that the U.S. would stay until the job was done? Maybe Bush has finally decided that the job can never be done and so the time has come for the tried and tested "solution" of a face saving device that will serve no other purpose than to give some highly compromised individuals a way of leaving an impossible situation without actually screaming out: "I was wrong and everything I thought was wrong. Now let them sort things out for themselves, and by the time the bottom falls out I will be gone, if not forgotten."

Makes you despair over the arrogance of these politicians who ruin everything on a whim (or on a lie: "Yes, of course Iraq has WMD") and then leave future administrations to clean up their mess.
