Aug. 11, 2005 Jerry Falwell is the best friend of the opinion columnist, he is a treasure trove of outrageous statements. At the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans, horny dudes wait with bated breath for hotties to expose their boobs, in Lynchburg journalists salivate at the prospect of Falwell providing them with material for another story. This week, the Anti-Defamation League, condemned the recent appeal by Jerry Falwell for his followers to "vote Christian in 2008." Jerry Falwell's appeal for his sheep to "vote Christian" is not only anti-Semitic, it's also anti-Atheist, anti Buddhist, anti-Shinto, anti-Wiccan , anti-Muslim and anti-democratic. Can you imagine how Jerry Falwell would react if a Muslim cleric urged his congregation to "vote Muslim"? The fat hypocrite from Lynchburg would have a fit, and he would immediately issue a press release branding the Muslim preacher a terrorist. As an agnostic, I worry when a religious leader orders his constituents to vote in a parochial manner. If enough citizens "vote Christian in 2008" it will be a sad day for agnostics, liberals, pagans and everyone who believes in a democratic and free state. Falwell's proclamation wouldn't be so bad if he had a correct understanding of Christianity. When Falwell proclaims, "vote Christian", he doesn't mean "vote for a politician who believes in waging peace instead of war, who has a desire to abolish poverty and to find a cure for AIDS." When Falwell says "vote Christian" he means vote for a politician who is anti-gay, anti-women, anti-affirmative action, anti-minorities and pro-war. Falwell's congregation should "vote common sense" and kick him out of the pulpit. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
