There Needs To Be A Revolt In The GOP

By Craig Chamberlain
Aug. 10, 2005

See, here's the problem. The GOP is supposed to be the party of fiscal responsibility. The party that says to taxpayers "we're not going to spend your money on pork projects" Yet President Bush has signed a 1,000 page 286 billion dollar highway bill into law. As usual when there is money in Washington there is a little something for everyone. Nothing gets the hogs to the trough like a highway bill.

So what happened to the fiscally responsible GOP? They take office and they go on a spending spree like a spoiled 16 year old who got her dad's credit card. Not that the Democrats would be any better. If they had their way it wouldn't have been 286 billion it would have been 500 billion. So I suppose we should be grateful, that the taxpayers are only paying 286. Right? Wrong.

It is up to the GOP to clean its own house. To purge the RINO's from its ranks that think that democracy is about flooding your state or district with money so you can stay in office until the end of the world. In 1994 the GOP signed the contract with America, and it was wildfully successful. We need another contract with the American people. Most don't trust politicians, and to be honest, it isn't hard to see why. It is time to demand that congress restrain its spending, or send them packing. A good way of doing this is to demand term limits(funny how once they get into office they forget all about term limits) the less time they have in Washington the less damage they can do. Pork is all about vote buying. If a congressmen is limited to two or three terms he won't have as much of a chance to buy his votes.

So if the GOP has proven unreliable in fiscal restraint they have proven reliable with tax cuts. The alchemist ecnomists who believe they can turn lead into gold if we just raise taxes enough are on very shaky ground. We have cut taxes and tax revenues are up and the deficit has plunged by 22% since earlier this year. Why is the GOP so succesful at one and not the other? Simple conservatives don't tolerate tax-hiking republicans. It's time to stop tolerating the druken sailor republicans as well. Maybe then we'll see some sane spending bills.
