Aug. 6, 2005 Hollywood should change its name to Hollow-wood. “Bewitched was another feeble attempt at creating a remake of something that didn’t need to be remade. If it ain’t broken don’t try to fix it. The first five minutes piqued my interest. Will Ferrell played a has-been superstar trying to make a comeback on the small screen as the star of a new series entitled “Bewitched.” After the first five minutes, the movie took a nosedive. Nicole Kidman didn’t fit the part of Samantha. No matter how cute she tried to be, she was too stiff and out of character. Stick with that sensuous woman you’re good at, Nicole. Not even the solid acting of Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine could make this film any better. Michael played Samantha’s dad and he did a great job, but the story line killed him. The same can be said for Ms. MacLaine. It was great to see her on the big screen again, but such a shallow part was a slap-in-the-face role for her. This woman is a skilled actress, not an “Endora.” Someone forgot to hire a writer for this movie. I found myself looking at my Timex nightglow watch about every seven minutes hoping the hands would magically start spinning. One small scene with Steve Carell as “Uncle Arthur” made me giggle, but one giggle isn’t worth the price of the popcorn I bought.
Hollywood has prostituted itself this year, trying to dress an old body in new clothes and selling it as a fresh new-look. Sorry, it didn’t work. Does no one in that spoiled little town read books anymore? There are literally thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of stories to be found in this world. Use them. Try writing some real art. Falling back on remakes tells the movie watcher, we have nothing new to show you, and that is pure poppycock.
