Aug. 5, 2005 Sometimes in life, there may be at least one situation that you knew was placed there just for you. Like while out shopping with a friend a few days ago, I could not help but hear what some of the store's employees at the sales counter were discussing. While my friend was enquiring about a certain cosmetic, the employees at the sales counter continued their little debate. They were wondering what the phrase L’arc De Triomphe meant in the English translation. So I reached into my memory bank where I excavated some of my high school and college French, but before informing the debaters of the translation, I also thought about the French monument itself. In 1806, Napoleon requested the monument be built to symbolise his victories and although he, Napoleon was removed from power before its completion, it was still erected. It was completed in 1836 and is situated at the centre of Place Charles de Gaulle on the border of the 8th, 16th and 17th arrondissement (district) . The triumphal monument is also decorated with three dimensional icons that commemorate previous battles such as the battle of Aboukir, Napoleon’s victory over the Turkish and the battle of Austerlitz; Napoleon’s victory over the Austrians. In addition, the monument also has an observatory from where there is a great view of the Champs-Elysees, La Defense, and the Sacre`-Coeur. And yes, before my friend and I walked away, I did inform the sales employees of the translation. L’arc de Triomphe when translated into English means, The Arch of Triumph.
