Aug. 4, 2005 You'd have thought the democrats won something big, heck you'd have thought they had won at all. You know it's bad when they are celebrating a loss. The special election to replace congressman Portman(R-OH) had the democrats going down to defeat. Jean Schmidt defeated Paul Hackett 52% to 48% and this is a cause of democratic celebration. Apparently they are so used to losing that when their margin of defeat isn't as bas as usual they get delirious and think they actually won. This was not a district that democrats had done well in, in fact it had been hard for a democratic candidate to get above the 35% mark. So I can see why they are happy that they only lost by 4 points. The truth is they shouldn't be happy. Special elections are always closer since the incumbent is no longer in the picture. (congressman Portman is now the U.S. trade represenative) The turnout was low, only 25% this probably helped the democrats showing. Still it is amusing, and sad, that a major political party is saying "hey this is a great sign." Reading the tea leaves from this election the democrats are predicting beating the republicans in the majority of the Governors races, retaking the House and the Senate, blocking Judge Roberts nomination, and winning the presidency in 2008. And from there they go on to make Al Gore the first emperor of the moon. Let me spell it out for you. The GOP won, that means a majority of the voters chose to stick with them, even if their candidate wasn't the best they had to offer. The republicans aren't going anywhere in Ohio, and they aren't going to lose the Senate. In fact it is pretty safe to say that the GOP will make gains. If the democrats want to win, try a little honesty, and admit when you lost. Oh well, if they want to go on celebrating losses, I'm all for letting them party. I can't wait to see what their 2006 bash is like. ------------ About the author: Craig Chamberlain has written more than 100 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
