Aug. 2, 2005 Appearing with Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa, Jose Canseco and other corkheads and steroid abusers before a congressional committee earlier this year, Rafael Palmeiro declared: "Let me start by telling you this: I have never used steroids. Period. I don't know how to say it any more clearly than that. Never." When he testified before Congress the talented baseball player did not parse words, he clearly, emphatically and vigorously denied using steroids. He had me convinced he wouldn't recognize steroids if they bit him in the ass. After Palmeiro was suspended this week by Major League Baseball for testing positive for steroids the slugger issued this statement: "I have never intentionally used steroids. Never. Ever. Period. Ultimately, although I never intentionally put a banned substance into my body, the independent arbitrator ruled that I had to be suspended under the terms of the program." When Palmeiro testified before a congressional committee he denied using steroids in no uncertain terms, the least he can do now that he has been exposed as a liar and as a steroid user is to humbly apologize. If he is not embarrassed to be a pitchman for Viagra, he shouldn't be ashamed to make an honest, heartfelt and unambiguous apology. But instead Palmeiro speaks out of both sides of his mouth, implying that he may have unintentionally taken steroids. How the hell does an athlete who is in superb physical condition, and who is well versed in supplements and vitamins, take steroids by mistake? Palmeiro has blasted 569 homeruns and produced 3,000 hits during a long and illustrious career, but now fans are left wondering how many hundreds of times he injected steroids?
