"A Paradox In Pink"- Excerpts For National Poetry Month

By Jennifer Brown Banks
Apr. 29, 2005

2 PLACES AT ONE TIME

Sitting here
With him,
Thinking about you-
Wondering if you’re somewhere
Thinking about me,
Thinking about us,
Wondering what went wrong-
Wondering why
No matter how hard I try
I can’t pretend
He makes me feel
Like you used to

2004

The year I discovered
Keanu Reeves
Special K
The joys of unemployment
And self-preservation

When I learned
That everybody in your family
Ain’t necessarily in your corner

And that a green thumb
Can be cultivated
By a late bloomer

Was seduced
By the soulful sounds
Of Norah Jones
The corner café
And the pleasure of my own company

Said goodbye
To Frazier
And Friends
And Oprah made fifty

The country was on the periphery of war
And my ex made a comeback

And I discovered that
God will sometimes shake you up
To move you forward

And poetry can be
A saving grace

POETS

Most of us
Would rather be loners
Than leaders.

Trade corporate security
For Pseudo celebrity
And get by
By holding 5 jobs
Just to pay the rent.

Believe that our prose
Like prozac
Can cure depressive states
And that our voice must be heard At any cost.

We count bills
Rather than sheep
Store visual images and text
In our sleep.

Challenge the status quo
And expose the truth.

We dare to be different,
Dance to our own tune
While soulfully
Serenading life.
