If You Could Talk With George W. Bush

By Robert Paul Reyes
Apr. 28, 2005

A recent Gallup Poll asked 1,000 randomly selected Americans the question: "If you could talk with President George W. Bush for fifteen minutes and give him advice about anything that's on your mind, what would you tell him?"

George W. Bush lives in a political cocoon; he is surrounded by political wonks and sniveling sycophants who are far removed from the desires, needs and expectations of the American public.

As a result the president (whoever the current occupant of the White House happens to be) is not in touch with the problems that are uppermost in the minds of his constituents.

The first George Bush was so unfamiliar with life outside the Beltway, that he was baffled, perplexed and intrigued by a scanner at a grocery store check-out stand.

Wouldn't it be a great idea if President George W. Bush reserved a couple of hours every week to sit down and chat with a few citizens? Holding hands with Saudi royalty may be exciting for George W. Bush, but he should also sit down and have a beer with a plumber from the Bronx or an assembly line worker from Detroit.

I have a gut feeling that the average American wouldn't discuss Tom DeLay, the Michael Jackson Trial, American Idol or most of the news getting attention from the media.

If I had only 15 minutes to chat with George W. Bush, I would use it to impress upon him the necessity of universal health care. I have friends who work two low-paying jobs to make ends meet -- who don't have any health insurance. I would show the president all of my medical bills that aren't covered by my insurance.

What would you talk with George W. Bush about? Unemployment? AIDS? Poverty? Racism? Abortion? Education? High price of gas? Gang violence?

Chances are that you will never get a chance to talk with the president, but you do have a voice. Write a letter to the editor of your newspaper. Run for the local school board. Set up your own blog on the Internet. There are lots of things that you can do to express your views to the public.
