Apr. 27, 2005 Fredric Smith wrote a rebuttal to an article appearing on Useless Knowledge titled “You Can Always Tell A Conservative.” Fair enough, even his attempt at humor is acceptable though not very funny in my opinion. Hog washing is serious business where I cone from. Let me get to the meat of my rebuttal. Mr. Smith refers to the Religious Right as some form of subculture akin to slaves before the Civil War. The last time I checked the religious right had the same standing in our society as the illiterate left. I could be wrong, I’m not good at research. I didn’t find Mr. Smiths anti-Semitic references to Al Franken particular amusing. I’m not a fan of Mr. Franken and I’m not Jewish so I guess I missed the point of his humor. Most Jews, I’ve known believe Jesus was a profit, just not their profit. The only people I’ve heard relate Liberals to Communists are Liberals. I don’t recall ever hearing a Christian relate the stock market results to a belief in Jesus. Mr. Smith is taking some liberties I doubt he can back up. Mr. Smith had some interesting opinions of what was in the minds of our founding fathers. I can assure him the separation of church and state, wasn’t one of them. The first amendment states the government shall not interfere with the free practice of religion. No mention of where, when , and how. I believe the founding fathers where only concerned there should be no national church. Mr. Smith seems to embrace socialism. I would point out that every country with a socialist society supports it with capitalism. Even that last Bastian of Communism, China has learned capitalism is the fuel that propels robust economies. In closing, I can only surmise Mr. Smith isn’t very funny and he certainly isn’t very well informed on the subject he chose. He’s articulate and does well with his spelling and grammar. If I missed something in Mr. Smiths article please enlighten me. ------------ About the author: Ken Hughes is prone to an occasional grammatical error and an occasional misspelled word.
