The Poetry Editors Of The World

By Brian Michael Barbeito
Apr. 26, 2005

Hundreds, thousands of little poets fighting for space. The spirit is often good but the words are weak, or worse, just trickery. The writer has to decide if the reader is needed. If the reader is not needed, maybe there is a chance. Journals, love letters, and suicide notes from all ages are perhaps the most true writing. At the writing game it is better to give a try and fail, at least falling on your own spot in the dirt, that you earned. Otherwise, its a cookie-cutter world.

The real stinkers are the editors of poetry magazines. They can all go stick it. Even when they accept your work they lie. They publish some work and contributer's copy might be free but nothing is ultimately free. If you don't show gratitude or purchase anything else those future poems they liked don't seem to see print more often than not. Screw it. Its better to write for writing's sake, for the muse, for the infinite or even for the nothingness.

As for all their stipulations...would that they stipulate their own phoney souls. Billy Shakespeare is long gone so relax...poets are just trying to express themselves and for that effort should always be encouraged no matter how bad the work. Please read our magazine and guidlines before submitting. Sounds so...reasonable. But any poem worth it's salt is not reasonable. And why would I want to read your godamn magazine if I am not in it?

So...to the poetry editors of the world and their precious little magazines...go stick it where the sun don't shine. The real truth is impossibly larger than print. A bunch of little groups of little people looking for dainty little delicate words. Its not a new bible people. There are already lots of those and look how much trouble they have caused.

Poems...written by the brave. Poems...sent to the cowardly. Men and women trying to create something being judged by men and women who couldn't edit the writing on a milk carton. What a backwards game.
