Some Still Don't Get It: Democracy Works [Pat Buchanan On C-Span]

I saw Pat Buchanan on C-Span recently. He was ranting about the war on terrorism. He dissmisses democracy as an effective weapon against the terrorists. He and like minded Paleo Conservatives believe(when they are not too busy cursing Abraham Lincoln and catolouging their third reich memorabilia) that we are only at war with the terrorists because we are "over there" I suppose they mean that we have diplomaitc ties with them as well as econmic ties. It's always been that way.

But it is only in the last 25 years that they have started with their war. Why? Because as America has gotten the dimwitted turban wearing thugs have made us a convient target. It is not the existence of Israel or some Jewish cabal that is causing this.

Buchanan and his minions believe that democracy is not a deterrent to terrorism, because (gasp!) democracies can be targeted by terrorism. I don't know why Buchanan didn't announce he had discovered that the Earth was round while he was at it. Of course democracies are going to be targets. Terrorists don't like democratic rule. Democratic governments are targets, but democracy does work.

Terrorists have never succeded against a deomcratic government. The ETA hasn't won in Spain, the IRA hasn't won in the UK, the Red Brigade didn't win in Italy.

It is no accident that all of the 9-11 hijackers came from dictatorships, most from Saudi Arabia one of the worst tyrannies in the world. The Muslims in democratic India are not in the terrorist ranks. Democracies don't enable terrorists, tyrannies do. So it shouldn't take a brilliant mind to figure out that democracies will be better equipped to fight terrorists and less likely to allow terrorists to form. The democratization of the Middle East is essential in the war on the terrorists. Too bad Pat Buchanan and those like him can't figure it out.
