Imagination And Knowledge

By Judy Ramsook
Apr. 25, 2005

"Imagination is more important than knowledge-" Einstein. True, but is it a combination of imagination and knowledge that enables us to enjoy the things we have today. Take, for example, a carpenter who has the knowledge to make the foundation for a building or house.

Then couple that with an architect, whose imagination formulates a design that makes whatever building it is appealing to a buyer. What you then have is a combined effort of knowledge and imagination, or take something else such as a work of fiction.

A writer/author's imagination can take you to places you have not been, say a magical world or a story filled with mystery, adventure, romance or whatever genre you prefer to read. But it is a publisher who has the working knowledge of how to get that book from manuscript form into book form and ultimately into the hands of the book buying, reading public that makes it a successful effort.

With the writer doing the major part by penning the work with his/her brilliant imagination at work then seeking a publisher that will place it in book form with knowledge of the publishing world, you have the two entities at work. Then there may be an instance when a piece of knowledge can be useless.

For instance, say you are stranded on a deserted island, but you know that you can shine your shoe by using the inside of a banana peel to do so, how will that portion of knowledge be of use to you if there is no one on the island for you to impress?

And say you do make it back to your civilised society and you want others to know about your stay on the island by writing a work of fiction about it? Then you can put your imagination to work, by creating a character or two who will make your story more exciting, now isn't imagination a great thing to have?
