Apr. 24, 2005 Denise W. Young’s Article, “Why The badge Becomes A Token For Abuse” scratches the surface of racism under color of authority. By “authority” I don’t mean only those who operate as a police force in the urban centers of America. I(‘m referring to those entities that work in tandem with the police to “label” and ostracize people of color—schools, the courts, parole boards, et al. ms. Young cites the Rodney King beating as an example, which again, was just the tip of the iceberg. The reasoning behind the actions and initial acquittal of that beating will never be brought to light, for cracking the skulls of black people is as American as baseball, apple pie or Chevrolet. (Read Ralph Ginzburg’s “100 Years of Lynchings”). The fact is, you don’t need a Ph.D in psychiatry to understand that racism is a form of mental illness. It is an irrational belief that one race has been divinely chosen to rule over others. Worse, this belief is perpetuated by irrational acts and ideology that are “excused” by those in power—whites. Thjese beliefs are further perpetuated by societal institutions maintained by whites. These institutions are run by people who see blackness as something to fear. These same people have manipulated history and continue to “readjust reality” to fit their needs. More prominent blacks—i.e., those who are financially successful—are under attack than at any time in history. Worse, black children are being labeled and “put into the system” in childhopod so as to create a false pattern of “unruliness” or “learning disability.” This in turn, rationalizes these children being under the “care” of the same racist institutions hell- bent on destroying them. A five year old black girl is manhandled and handcuffed by three police officers for being “unruly”; in Contra Costa County (California) a six year old black child was nearly tried for murder in CCC. Later, he was taken from his home AND community, then placed under the “care” of the county; that is, after being coached into a “confession” by an overzealous District Attorney. (I know of what I speak, as I served on the County Grand Jury at the time). Again, a 14-year old black kid is beaten under color of authority by the LAPD. Later, the officers are exonerated. The motto, “To Serve and Protect” fails to mention whose interests they are serving and protecting. Certainly nopt those of people of color. Meanwhile white kids, tired of being teased, are going to school with firearms (HELLO!) and are killing their peers in record numbers. The fact the overwhelming number of serial killers by definition are white proves that this labeling of blacks is misplaced; in psychologically terms, this is what I call “institutional displacement” of guilt and shame by those in power.
