Apr. 24, 2005 The next Ice Age is overdue. Perhaps, considering the blizzard blowing its way across the upper Midwest, it is beginning now. Despite the cacophony about "global warming" from the anti-capitalist types in their many disguises, the evidence from temperature readings OUTSIDE MAJOR CITIES is that the Earth has been cooling a bit. Major cities are heat producers and heat concentrators. It is not surprising that readings taken from growing population centers would show some increase in temperatures over the past few decades. Oh yes, I know, a glacier in Antarctica is melting a bit and chunks are breaking off. But other than in that relatively small peninsula and glacier in Antarctica, the rest of Antarctica has gotten colder and the ice thicker. Indeed, the tiny amount melted in that small part is nowhere near the amount added in the rest of Antarctica. The melting glacier is, therefore, part of a local weather pattern that does not indicate GLOBAL warming, just a little warming in a small patch of Antarctica. And yes, humans have used some fossil fuels and added a tiny though significant amount of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. And this may be very, very good, if it helps to ameliorate the next Ice Age. Otherwise, human beings may be the next frozen mammals dug up in millennia hence when the big thaw comes. Instead of frozen wooly mammoths in Siberia, the next thaw may find frozen human beings in Chicago. If all the crops freeze and die and people begin to starve, perhaps we will be motivated to drill for some more oil, burn some more fossil fuel, and put some fluorocarbons back in our hair spray before it's too late!
