Apr. 24, 2005 Europeans weren´t honoured by visits of President Bush to their continent much during his first period of presidency. And look now: he´s coming to Europe again for the second time within only a few months. I wonder he would have come that quick when it wasn´t for commemorating the end of World War II 60 years ago, but still. He comes. I understood he will visit several countries. Russia, of course. Although he claims President Putin is still a very good friend and useful ally, everyone knows tension between Russia and the US is rising. President Putin seems to get uneasy with all his neighbour states that chase away dictators and turn into democracies, wishing to join the European Union one day. His own country, to the contrary, seems to become less democratic each month, thanks to his policy. I´m curious how long the relationship between the two can remain to be said all well. In the end, President Bush wishes democracy in every possible country in the world. That means also in Russia. Will he keep his word? Will he put pressure on President Putin? President Bush is also going to visit the Netherlands. Well, it´s not an official visit meaning he is going to meet our queen and prime minister. He only spends the night in a hotel in the South of the Netherlands because of his visit to a grave for American soldiers who didn´t survive World War II and are buried there. The fact that President Bush comes to our country hasn´t made people enthusiastic yet. The hotel owner is proud, of course. So is the mayor of the place where he will stay. That´s it. Oh, and there will be a manifestation against the policy of President Bush (Iraq, environment, economics). Not in Limburg, the province he´s staying, but in Amsterdam, the capital. George W. Bush visiting Europe for a second time. The psychological impact of it in the Netherlands will be almost zero. And elsewhere? It depends on what he says and does. ------------ About the author Johan Peters: I'm a freelance journalist/editor from Rotterdam, The Netherlands. I write articles, columns and books.
