Apr. 23, 2005 If you've ever wanted to pursue something but wondered about how others around you might react to your action, then this is for you. One too many times you see some people who worry about who could be saying or thinking whatever of them or their actions. This may be hard to believe, but in certain societies some children's parents tend to be more concerned about the thoughts their neighbours may harbour if they or one of their kids were to do something the neighbours may consider to be a bit risque. For example, say one of your kids is dating someone she is unhappy with and wants to start seeing someone else. (A female was used here because in most societies it's considered all right for a male to have an interest in other girls, without the neighbours having much of a reaction.) Her parents may have a bit of a problem with this since they are afraid that the neighbours will think that their daughter is rather 'loose.' Sounds rather selfish, doesn't it? You would think that one of the roles of a parent would be to ensure the well being or happiness of their children. Sad to say, but sometimes it isn't. Say, she does end up marrying this one person who makes her unhappy just to please her parents from getting a bad name in the neighbourhood and ends up being severely abused. Will the neighbours you were so worried might be thinking less of you should she have been allowed to date someone else, now jump in to rescue her from her plight or offer advice? This may come as another shock, but no they won't, instead this new incident will just give them something else to whisper about. Neighbours are fine to have, but do not allow their gossip and thoughts of you and your family to come between you and your loved ones, after all, it's your kid's happiness that could be on the line. And those neighbours you might be worried about, unless one of them happens to be your boss, they are not paying your monthly mortgage and other bills, you are. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
